Jerry Mosey has announced his candidacy for Niagara County Legislator in the 12th District. Intending to be a new voice for Lewiston residents, Jerry aims to bring real reform to the governance of Niagara County. "I plan to reinvigorate the voters of the 12th District by challenging the status quo in Lockport and addressing those issues which mean the most to the people of Lewiston," states Mosey. "My primary focus as a county legislator will be to stop the constant tax increases that Lewiston residents have faced each and every year."
A proponent of open and honest government, Jerry believes that the County is at its best when it listens to its residents and is responsive to their needs and concerns. In this regard, if elected, Jerry will fight for lower property taxes, wiser spending in the county budget, and meaningful IDA reform. Concerning property taxes, he believes that, "Lewiston residents do not have the patience to sit idly by while their representatives in the county legislature continue to increase our property taxes. In the 2007 county budget, Lewiston's rate of increase was around 3.3%, higher than almost anywhere else in the county. That's unacceptable, plain and simple." As a county legislator, Jerry will also be an active partner with Town and Village leaders in addressing community issues and, if elected, plans to regularly hold town-hall style meetings with Lewiston residents.
A resident of the Village of Lewiston, Jerry grew up in Western New York and has spent the majority of his adult life here. In the mid to late 1960s, he taught English and Latin at what was then Bishop Duffy High School. Jerry was also assistant Track and Cross-Country Coach and moderator of the senior class as well as other clubs and organizations. In his own words, he is now "semi-retired" after being Chair of the Education Department at Medaille College. He currently is an adjunct professor at Niagara University.
Jerry has always been active in community service and government. As a young man, he was elected President of the Catholic Young Adults - an organization of several thousands of young voters. Last year, he ran a vigorous campaign for Village Trustee. Throughout his life, he has been recognized for his leadership qualities and effective skills. Just prior to his retirement in 2002, Jerry received Medaille College's highest distinction for teaching excellence and campus leadership.
Jerry Mosey received his undergraduate degree in Secondary Education from Western Michigan University; his Master's degree in Administration and Supervision from the University of Central Florida; and a Doctorate degree in Education, Leadership, and Administration from the State University of New York at Buffalo. He is also certified by the State of New York in five separate areas - two of the areas are in School District Administration and School Business Administration. As a past principal, Jerry has a great deal of experience in fiscal management. He is also a past treasurer of the New York State Association of Teacher Educators.
Very active in the Lewiston community, Jerry is presently a member of the Village of Lewiston Parks and Recreation Committee, the Executive Board of the Lewiston Council on the Arts, the Lewiston Kiwanis, and the Lewiston Order of the Moose. As a member of the Council on the Arts, he has acted in the Marble Orchard as well as the Lewiston Ghost Walks. Jerry lectors at Our Lady of Fatima Shrine and writes both religious and secular music. He also is a member of the Lewiston Democratic Committee and a presenter for the Episcopalian Diocese of Buffalo. In the latter role, he has conducted diversity (anti-racism) workshops in Lewiston, Niagara Falls and Lockport. Jerry also volunteers at the Lewiston Senior Center as an entertainer.
