This past weekend marked the 18th annual "Old Sanborn Days" at the Sanborn Fire Company Grounds. This community event was put together by the Rotary Club of Niagara County Central. Wood carving shows, dance presentations, and even a petting zoo were just a few of the activities that families of all ages enjoyed over the weekend.
The money raised during "Old Sanborn Days" helps support many not-for-profit organizations, such as cerebral palsy research, and even provides scholarships for Starpoint, Niagara-Wheatfield, and Wilson High School students.
Antique car shows, a Chinese auction, and child ID programs by the Niagara County Sheriff's Department also were included in this year's event.
"Everybody has a job," said Bob Duell, one of the original founders of the Rotary Club of Niagara County Central. "We all pitch in together. It's all teamwork." The Rotary Club had plenty of food for everyone, as did the fire company with their chicken barbecue, which was enjoyed by many. "We have a lot of events catered to people," said Gary Hunt, president of the Rotary Club. "They can come in and it's free. No charge. And just walk around and enjoy their day."
People from all over attended the event, including those from both Niagara and Eric Counties, and even Canada.
"Old Sanborn Days" is just one of the many events that the Rotary Club of Niagara County Central puts together throughout the year. It
was charted in 1987. Today it includes the towns of Lewiston, Wheatfield, Niagara, Pendleton and Wilson. It's made up of a lot of professional business people, and prides itself on providing for the community of Niagara County.
"It's people from all walks of life," Duell explained. "Different businesses, different professions, different jobs to get together in the community." Duell also said that rotary is defined as a "model of the world at peace," and "Old Sanborn Days" was a perfect example of that.
