Part Four of a Multi-Part Series: Buy From a U-Pick Farm

In Western New York, U-Pick farms can be a part of life for many families. I personally remember sunny afternoons spent in strawberry fields with my parents and brother, picking until my fingers were stained red. For those who have never tried it, it's a family activity that allows youto reconnect with the land.

U-Pick farms provide the freshest produce around, and you can choose exactly the quality and quantitiy you want. You can usually get it for a lower price, because you invest the effort and the grower doesn't have to pay a middle-man or pay for advertising. Finally, this is a somewhat greener option, because it is not only local food, but there is less automated labor involved in the growing/production cycle.

Cornell Cooperative Extension has compiled information about U-Pick Farms in Niagara County for the 2008 growing season.
