Story


A Cleaner Niagara Falls

As promised I will be telling real stories about real people who helped to clean Niagara Falls on April 21st - the Niagara Beautification Commision's annual Beautify Niagara Campaign. This story is about the organizing committee who met on a regular basis to put this event together and today we will highlight the Niagara Falls Fire Department.

As Vice Chairman of the NBC I have had the pleasure of handling this event for many years. The City of Niagara Falls Fire Chief has always been the Honorary Chairman. This goes back to the mid 1980s when I first became a part of this group. This year, our current Fire Chief, William MacKay was an exceptional leader. He provided a firefighter on light duty assignment due to an "on the job injury" to take all the phone calls from volunteers. Firefighter Anthony Presutti manned the telephone and did a terriffic job. I was relieved of returning hundreds of calls if away from my telephone. Chief MacKay also assigned Battaliion Chief Gregory Colangelo to co-ordinate with the Great American Clean Up Committee and he arranged to secure hundreds of trash bags donated by the Glad Corporation. The Fire Department picked up all our other donated supplies and stored them and opened the headquarters building so we could bundle items together prior to the event. They attended our meetings and offered safety suggestions and several firefighters arrived at the kick off early to help load and deliver the bags, gloves, and other items and set up the distribution process. Battalion Chief Colangelo and I took photos of the event and he and the Chief and Anthony helped at the picnic following the event. Hats off to the NFFD and thanks for all their help.
