"Mary! Mary! Quite contrary! How does your garden grow?" You can find out on Saturday July 12, 2008 at the Orchard Parkway Garden Walk. However, you will not find a contrary person involved in this effort so forget about that part of it.
The Orchard Parkway Block Club is hosting their first annual Garden Walk from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm and even if you are not a "flower" person you will love this. Click on the photos for a larger version. This is just a peek - you have to "walk the walk".
I met Scott Akdogan and Artie Vanderpool at the weekly Smart Growth Series last year at the Main Street Public Library. They seemed interested in helping in their community and we discussed a block club. Those of us who know Niagara Falls, know that Orchard Parkway is not a high crime area but crime is not the only reason for residents to become involved in their neighborhood.
The idea for this Garden Walk began at the Elmwood Avenue Garden Walk in Buffalo just about a year ago when Scott, Artie, and neighbor Allison Pasquantino felt it would be "just the thing for Orchard Parkway" and they began their efforts, dividing the duties, and setting their plan in motion with a goal of holding the event in June or July in 2008.
In the meantime, Scott has been attending the monthly meetings of the Niagara Falls Block Club Council and Allison along with Artie, had obviously been working in the neighborhood gathering the people together. By August, they had a plan of action and passed out participation forms. It was decided to include the history and architecture of the street as well, and they agreed that no prizes would be awarded. By March 2008, the plan was in full swing with flyers, posters and guides in the planning stages. The began holding meetings with their neighbors, who volunteered to help with the Garden Walk to make it a success. Artie and Allison volunteered to do the PR work for the event, while others volunteered to trim the bushes and plant the flowers for their elderly neighbors. This is a block club in action!
At the June meeting of the Niagara Falls Block Club Council, they presented minutes of previous meetings and names of their officers so they are now officially a member of the Council. The club secretary, Tara King, of the Rochester area, attended the meeting with Artie and recalled meeting Scott and Artie, who moved here from Texas, Allison, and other neighbors during one of the Garden Walk planning meetings. Together, they all wanted to become a part of the neighborhood and the community. They went door to door to meet the other residents and floated the idea of a garden walk to encourage participation in neighborhood meetings. That catalyst brought them all together. At this meeting, they announced that the Garden Walk is a reality, celebrating the natural beauty and history of Orchard Parkway and Artie presented the flyers and invited everyone to attend. He is also a Member of the Board of the Main Street Business & Professional Association.
Back to the Garden Walk! Saturday July 12, 2008 from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm. The walk begins at Harris & Lever Florist Shop, 1225 Main Street where you pick up the guide. The event is open to the public and there is no charge.
Isn't this a good news story!!!
