Story


Beautify Niagara Kick Off April 26th

It was still dark when I arrived at the Seneca Niagara Casino on April 26th at about 7:15 am for the start of the Niagara Beautification Commission annual Beautify Niagara citywide clean up, but the Seneca staff had already set up and were ready for us. This is the fourth year they have hosted our kick off ceremony and provided a continental breakfast and a shirt for volunteers who have registered early. This is a case where the early bird does get the worm as time is needed to organize sizes, order and imprint.

This year we arranged for volunteers to pick up supplies for their groups at the Niagara Falls Fire Department headquarters during the week (see previous story). That eliminated the huge crowd at the kick off and the long lines. Many other groups had their own coffee hour at their clean up location.
City block clubs took part in their own neighborhoods including Echota West Block Club, East Side Block Club, Blockbusters Block Club, Tennessee Avenue Block Club, S.A.F.E. Block Club, the 400 Block Club, Black Creek Block Club, River Rapids Block Club, Michigan Avenue Block Club, Highland Avenue Block Club, Memorial Park Block Club, and the North End Block Club. The Pierce Avenue Block Club, LaSalle Avenue Block Club, Willow Avenue Block Club and the Whitney Avenue Block Club held their own separate event in their area. Other civic and youth organizations were also involved and will be mentioned in future articles.Be sure to look at the photos as they tell the whole story. You will see that the Niagara Falls Police Department Bike Patrol stopped by to say hello before checking on our volunteers during the day. The event was well attended and everyone was relieved that the weather outlook was good for the day.

We had a short program during the kickoff with Fire Chief William MacKay as M.C. and Mayor Paul Dyster thanked the 1300 + volunteers who signed up. Also sending best wishes were New York State Senator Antoine Thompson and Niagara County Legislator Renae Kimble along with City Councilmen Charles Walker and Chris Robins. Then it was "hi ho - hi ho - it's off to work we go!!. More great photos and stories to follow.
