Niagara Beautification Commission Beautify Niagara

April 26th was the BIG day in Niagara Falls for the annual Beautify Niagara citywide spring clean up.

Work began several months ago with the planning committee. We met several times to be sure everything went smoothly and we hoped for a return of our 2007 successful Beautify Niagara when over 500 volunteers came out to clean up our City in time for spring and visitors. See the first photo to the right and you will recognize Jane Schroeder from NTCC, Jill Shuey from ReNU Niagara COPC, City of Niagara Falls Fire Chief William MacKay, Fran Boltz from Niagara University, Patsy MacKenna of LaSalle Pride and Clarence Bradley from the City Department of Public Works. Next is Paul Gleasner, Carl Helbig and Dick Lucinski from the Niagara Gazette, myself and Cal Babcock a great volunteer with NBC.

The assignments were given out by Chairman Norma (later referred to as The Boss) and we all went to work to make this the most successful clean up campaign ever. We chose the same logo as before and started to publicize the event. I began by writing to and encouraging all our past volunteers to return again (and many of them did by the way) and the Gazette started the advertisements.

Jill Shuey and her student intern Tara volunteered to take the registrations and they soon started pouring in. It became a monumental task contacting volunteers and keeping everyone sorted out, assigning places to work and getting donations of bag and gloves. We are so fortunate to have the Seneca Niagara Casino as one of our sponsors as they provide a meeting place for our kick off with a continental breakfast and a shirt for our volunteers. We had to stop the shirt orders on April 1st to allow time for delivery and imprinting.

Two weeks before the event we began to sort out the bags and gloves. Lots of photos of these volunteers are next. We literally took over the Niagara Falls Fire Department conference room at their headquarters building where we stored and sorted the items which we marked for each volunteer group or individual.
The shirts were all sorted by size and put with bags and gloves and packed in a box or a bag with the name and cleanup location attached.
