NBC plants in Niagara Falls again!

Remember my story about planting in the roundabout in downtown Niagara Falls? I see that 262 people read that story so maybe you would be interested in the finished product and a story about another planting effort spearheaded by Andy Giarrizzo our landscape expert member at the Niagara Beautification Commission. Take a look at the first photo which is the roundabout in full bloom! There are 72 mums in all and hidden below is a secret only to be revealed in the spring. This is a welcome addition to downtown visitors and residents alike. Thanks again to Andy, the NBC volunteers and the NiagaraTourism and Convention Corporation for their monetary contribution to purchase the flowering mums. Thumbs up!

Now to the second part of the story. Andy organized an effort to plant some of the spruce trees started in pots at the NBC tree nursery . The nursery is located in Hyde Park adjacent to the City Maintenance Building and was started many years ago as an effort to assist the City in replacing trees in neighborhoods and city parks. Many have been placed in various locations over the years.

The spruce trees planted on a recent Saturday in October were started at the nursery and moved by city workers to a triangle of green space behind 39th Street at the Walnut Avenue - Pine Avenue intersection. Holes were dug by these workers and the Niagara County Sheriff Department Work Force assisted in the planting under the guidance of Andy and our NBC Chair Marge GIllies. Marge brought along her adopted grandson Dean who also helped in the roundabout effort. An excellent way to get young people involved in gardening projects. Unfortunately a lot of our NBC members are like yours truly who have aged sufficiently that it is difficult to haul large pots around so we have to depend on the above mentioned to help us. We are eternally grateful to the Sherriff Work Force crews who assist in various clean up and other projects throughout the County of Niagara.

Take a look at the finished work in the other photos. If you click on the phote it will appear slightly larger. Just imagine what these will look like in a few years. A neighbor already called and expressed his delight. There was a total of 70 trees planted - 30 blue spruce, 25 white spruce and 15 Norway spruce.
