A playground for Niagara Falls North End
Contributed by: Norma Higgs on 9/27/2007

The North End Block Club has taken the initiative to spearhead the revitalization of the playground that once was located at North Avenue and Lockport Street adjacent to the Lockport Street Bridge. Candace Corsaro is Chairman of this group which consists of members of the neighborhood watch block club. She remembers when she used to play at this spot when it was a thriving playground with swings and other equipment.Several yearsago the City of Niagara Falls closed the park and removed all the equipment due to problems with maintenance costs.

"It has been a dram of mine to have this park revitalized once again" she stated at the groundbreak ceremony held September 27, 2007. "Our block club uses this area for our "Kid's Day" event and last year when Councilman Charles Walker attended we discussed how it was a shame that this area was not used as a playground. His words encouraged me and I presented a proposal to our block club for reopening the park for approval. And here we are a year later breaking ground".

She admits there is a long way to go even though the group was awarded $40,000 from a Community Development Block Grant last year which will be used to install a fenced in and lighted basketball court. New York State Assemblywoman Francine DelMonte arranged for additional funding along with New York State Senator Antoine Thompson, the Niagara Falls Kiwanis Club and the Niagara Falls Firefighters Union.

The playground will include equipment accessable to the handicapped and it will be the only America Disabilities Act Handicap accessable playground in the City of Niagara Falls The equipment will be built to withstand any weather conditions and will include two shelters with BBQ's and picnic tables, benches, bicycle racks, trash bins and will be fenced in. There will be Park Rules & Regulations.

Taking part in the ground breaking were Hon. Francine DelMonte, Mayor Vince Anello, City Councilman Charles Walker, Jeffrey Sheridan, representative of the office of U. S. Congresswoman Louise Slaughter and Linda Walker, area representative for Senator Antoine Thompson. Mr. Sheridan presented a flag that was flown over the U. S. Capitol. Also present were Laurie Davis, President of the Kiwanis Club of Niagara Falls, Roger Spurback, President of the Niagara Falls Block Club Council and other members of the community and neighborhood. Along with Mayor Anello, the City was represented by Fire Chief William MacKay, Fire Prevention Life Safety Educator Albert Hornung and City Parks Director John Caso.

Donations are being accepted and a plaque will be placed as recognition. Checks can be made payable to the North End Block Club Playground Fund. There will be a city-wide Chinese Auction held on February 14, 2008 at Antonio's Banquet Facility on Niagara Falls Boulevard. Please watch for details on this event.

Again Roger Spurback says this is what block clubs are about - changing their community and working with government.

The efforts of the North End Block Club are to be commended. Block Clubs and community leaders working together as a team produce these kind of results. Bob Miller Echota West Block Club
