Those Kids in the Hall
Contributed by: Buffalo.com/YourHub Tom Voss on 5/4/2008

For many parts of the country, the television "The Kids in the Hall" was a brief memory, if nothing else. Reruns of their show aired on Comedy Central and a movie, "Brain Candy", which came out in 1996 was probably the scope of their American exposure. But for those fortunate enough to live so close to Canada, we were able to see the original airing of their sketch comedy show when it ran between 1988 and 1994. Now, nearly 20 years after their show's first episode, they are back on tour.

Their act is made up of the five original cast members including Dave Foley, Kevin McDonald, Bruce McMulloch, Mark McKinney, and Scott Thompson who have all found other activities to fill their time between now and then. Each had their ups and downs so you had to wonder how the show would actually turn out. Could they have lost their touch over the years? Thankfully, they have not.

The show lasted a solid hour and half and there was no rest for the audience or the comedy troupe at the SenecaNiagaraEventsCenter on Friday night. With a mix of old skits and new skits, there was something to laugh at every single time. The humor was mainly targeted towards adults but the sketches are for the most part whimsical, outlandish and just plain odd. Now this isn't necessarily a bad thing, it just takes a certain frame of mind to understand.

You get men in drag, time machines, Hitler and a chicken lady all in one show. If all of that sounds a little too strange for you then you may not like "The Kids in the Hall" and that's a fair enough assumption to make. But if that combination intrigues you then the show would have been the thing for you.

As mentioned earlier, there was worry if any of them had lost their touch over the years or would phone in the show. There have been past acts where this was just the case but the same fate has not befallen this case. Each member was equally represented (in case you had a favorite) and they all seemed to really enjoy what they were doing. That may seem to go without saying, but when someone doesn't put forth the effort it comes through in the performance.

They used a mixture of both old and new acts but by no means does this detract from the overall show. Inside jokes were kept to a minimum and as long as you're into the humor you'll get some entertainment out of this. Some personal favorites from this show include Scott Thompson's Buddy Cole monologue, Bruce McCulloch's Gavin and any sketch that primarily involved Dave and Kevin bantering back and forth. There really weren't any sketches that fell flat or didn't have their funny moments.

If you had to squeeze a complaint out, it would be that they could have inserted more prerecorded, new material. As is, they had one, which served as an introduction to the show and another one later on whose title I really can't say here but I'll just refer to it as a showcase of a man's deep love for his automobile. One or two more of these would have been nice to have but maybe I'm just being too greedy.

If you're a "Kids in the Hall" fan, the show was everything you could have ever hoped for. If you're just a fan of comedy then you certainly wouldn't have walked out disappointed either. Given, a certain taste in humor is required to enjoy the entire show, but that doesn't detract from the overall hilarity of the evening.
