The Castellani Art Museum will present an exhibition of works by Buffalo artist Kurt Treeby in the latest of the museum's
Topspin Series. "Fuzzy Memories" will debut with a First Friday opening on March 7, 2008 from 5:00 - 9:00 p.m.
Topspin, a juried series of solo exhibitions by regional artists, is sponsored by Tops Friendly Markets.
Kurt Treeby's recent work is an homage to both art history and kitschy commercialized craft. His fiber works focus on iconic imagery and the relationship between high and low art forms. "Fuzzy Memories" explores the idea of the visual experience and the concept of widespread artistic appeal.
Treeby has recreated familiar masterpieces as latch-hook rugs, including versions of Picasso's
Guernica, Jackson Pollack's
Convergence, parts of Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel ceiling and the ubiquitous
Girl with a Pearl Earring by Vermeer.
Inspired by his vigorous studies in art history, theory, and fine arts, Treeby's artistic search for the distinction between high and low art has culminated in a series of bold reinterpretations of historically renowned artworks. Beyond their own existence, these works of art transcend their physicality. Michael Beam, Curator of Exhibitions & Collections, says, "
Fuzzy Memories is an ultra-manufactured trip through art history, with a kitschy machined aesthetic."
TheFirst Fridayreception will feature an artist's talk, refreshments, full cash bar, live music by Penelope, and art activities for kids. Admission is free for museum members/$5 for non-members. For more information, call 716-286-8200.
