Beatlemagic Casts a Spell on Audience at N.U.
Contributed by: Buffalo.com/YourHub Lindsay Bartkowski on 2/2/2008

Last night at Niagara University's Live Music Series welcomed Beatlemagic, a renowned Beatles' tribute band, back on the stage. This reporter was a newcomer to the event, but surely one of few. This group has a large following of Beatlemaniacs from every generation in the community. Fans had the opportunity to travel back a few decades and listen to the musical stylings of Paul, John, George, and Ringo, while also enjoying refreshments provided by Niagara University.

Beatlemagic was a former wedding band that just found their niche in Beatles performances. The members of last night's Beatlemagic -- Russ Thomas, Mike Kiel, Todd Mertens, and Gary Astridge (filling in for Beatlemagic's original Ringo who was out due to hand surgery) - had audiences cheering for more. Their performance included detailed costumes, very convincing imitations of the Beatles, including British accents, and a wide variety of Beatles songs from the early to the late albums.

Beatlemagic opened with "From Me to You," a crowd pleaser. As the show continued, they played many favorites and hits of the Beatles, interacting with the crowd and demanding their singing along. During a short intermission, while Beatlemagic changed from their black suits to their multi-colored Sergeant Pepper costumes, the music continued with a few karaoke performances from enthusiastic, and talented, audience members.

Although Beatlemagic did not change into their final costumes for this performance, the show's conclusion was as powerful as anyone could've hoped. The band's finale was the hugely anticipated song: "Hey Jude." Their performance was remarkable, each member going great lengths to best imitate their Beatle vocally, musically, and through gestures and body language. Their voices were spectacular and they had instrumentation to match. Although Beatlemagic usually concludes with "Hey Jude," the crowd's enthusiasm prompted them to play one final song, "Twist and Shout," while the crowd was walking out. However, it seemed that more people stayed and danced then actually left at this point!

So, to conclude my raving of Beatlemagic, one must insist that any and every Beatles fan go see this performance as soon as possible. These performers are as close to the real thing as you can get. By the end of the show, this reporter found that she'd developed a huge crush on Paul; so, one can see why the Beatles had millions of screaming girls after them. Their next performance in Buffalo will be at the Tralf Music Hall on Main Street on March 20th. "From Me to You," Beatlemagic is a performance that anyone would enjoy "Eight Days a Week."
