The second annual Stomp Out Stigma 5k at Niagara University was at it again.
The college in conjunction with the Race's sponsors Active Minds a chapter of Niagara University, is raising awareness and making the facts known that much easier.
"Stigma isn't a disease, but the stereotype of mental health and how people who suffer from it are viewed and judged." Bill Newton, race director said.
With over 170 participants this year alone running an actual distance of 3.1 miles, this year's fund raising came out close to $1,000.
"We want people to know that we are out there to help." Newton said.
All proceeds of the race go to benefit the Mental Health Association of Niagara County, Inc. where they try to expel the notions and stereotypes associated with having and living with a mental illness.
The race featured two options that an individual could participate in; by paying $10 one could either walk a one mile set course, or run the designated 5k or 3.1 miles.
As part of the entrance fee, the racers also received a free 'Stomp Out Stigma' tee shirt, a pint glass and unlimited food and beverages in the Kiernan Recreation Center following the race.
The New York Institute of Massage was also at the event to lend a helping hand to the runners and walkers needing a little after race relaxation with massages of all types.
The efforts of all involved in the race and the planning of the event seemed to make a big difference in raising awareness for mental illness.
