Remembering the War - Helen Gorczynski
Contributed by: Thanks for the Memories   on 7/18/2008

It was a beautiful Sunday afternoon when my husband, Walter, his father and I went to visit my sister-in-law, Estelle. She was in the hospital, Mt. View, recovering from TB. This was one of the regular Sunday visits to her.

While my husband and I were with her, my father-in-law stopped to listen to the news. He heard of the Pearl Harbor attack. So when we came back out, he started to tell us of the Japanese attack on US. We just didn't believe it. My husband said, "It can't be, you didn't hear it right."

Once the war was on, the enlistment of the boys started. My brother, Stan, was the first to be called. He was in the army engineers. They built roads in preparation for D-Day.

Then my brother Frank was called. He joined the navy. He was one of the boys at Iwo Jima.

As the war went on, I worked at Bell Aircraft. I was a riveter.

Then the day came when my husband was called. They were losing men left and right. United States was preparing for D-Day. My husband left in October and got shipped right into the infantry.

They didn't train very long. They were shipped right out to France. We kept writing to each other daily.

It was a hard time at home, also. We were rationed with butter, sugar, meat, etc. Not much meat, so every now and then, we made a trip to Canada for chickens. Three of us went: my sister, Val, my sister-in-law, Kay, was the driver, and I. None of us would touch the chickens. We were so afraid. So we stopped at a farm, bought a few chickens, had the farmer tie them up and put them in the trunk. Now all we had to do was pray so that the chickens would be quiet when we came over the bridge.

We were successful. My parents couldn't believe it. The chickens were very good, and we enjoyed them.

As the war went on, we did get one of those letters about my brother, Stan, being wounded in France. He came home and slowly recovered.

The war in Europe ended, and my husband stayed over after the war. He was stationed in Germany. he was one of the soldiers who had to look around and find a place for our soldiers to stay.
