Oops...Another 16 year-old Did It Again
Contributed by: Nichole Walls   on 1/6/2008

Teenage pregnancies are no longer few in number but it has now become more of a style, a fad, maybe even an epidemic. But the truth is we don't hear much about it, not unless someone in the spotlight like 16 year-old actress, Jamie Lynn Spears is being criticized. But what upsets me most is not the fact that she is pregnant, but the fact that there are many teenagers across the land and even in our own city that fall victim to these mistakes and yet no one is taking the time out to help them. Helping someone goes way beyond buying pampers, pacifiers, clothing and other gifts. When I say "help" I'm talking about help prevent the altercation from even occurring. Surely no one can be there every moment that a teenage girl decides to take that chance, but on the other side no one is there telling them not to before they even put themselves in that predicament. High schools don't really talk about sex all you really hear is "abstinence is the best way", but we as a society owe them a better explanation. Tell them WHY abstinence is a better way, and how one event could lead to a lifetime of trouble. I know that talking to teenagers won't stop all of them from doing what they already have their mind set on, but it can help. Just think about all those 16, 17 and 18 year olds who fought temptation and decided to remain abstinent because somebody took the time to talk to them. I firmly believe that we have a lot of work to do, because the teenage pregnancy rate is getting ridiculous. Who can you blame though, most of these teenagers parent's probably had them when they were young, but its time to break the cycle. We need to explain to this younger generation that having children at a young age strips them of their best years. I personally feel extremely bad for Jamie Lynn Spears, because had she decided to get an abortion the media would of made a big fit about that, so we also need to stop being so contradictive. The difference between Jamie Lynn Spears and the average 16 year-old is that she actually has the means to take care of a child, but that doesn't take away from the fact that she is still a child herself. She isn't the first, and if we don't figure out something fast...she surely won't be the last. "Teenage Pregnancy 101"
