Students of Bishop Timon - St. Jude High School announced that they will conduct several activities related to the crisis in the Darfur region of the Sudan in Africa. The activities are intended to raise the awareness of the situation in that region, as well as inspire the Timon community to become involved in activities designed to make a difference in the Dafur crisis.
The crisis in Darfur has become an international effort to end the human rights injustices against the civilian people of the region. The Sudanese government is suspected of funding a military organization that targets various ethnic groups in the Darfur region. International organizations have estimated the death toll at 200,00-400,000 people while the Sudanese government has claimed that military action has only seen 9,000 fatalities.
The students of Timon, with guidance from Thomas Joyce, Global Studies teacher, and Suzanne Overdorf, Director of Campus Ministry, will host several activities including a letter writing campaign to several political leaders, selling "Save Darfur" bracelets with all proceeds going to benefit the Darfur region and a petition drive asking the United States government to do more to alleviate the human rights tragedies in Sudan.
The Darfur Relief program will culminate with a
"Dinner for Darfur", a community event held in the cafeteria at Timon. The goal of the dinner will be to draw media attention to the efforts from Timon students. The students will be encouraging elected leaders to attend the dinner to strengthen their awareness on this important issue.
The
"Dinner for Darfur" will be held on May 31, 2007 at 7pm in the Timon cafeteria. Tickets are $10 for students, $15 for adults and $25 for couples. Tickets can be purchased in the schools Main Office between 9am - 3pm.
