The biggest news coming out of the June 25 board meeting of course was the passage of the windmill ordinance. This was done through a lot of hard work by both the town and the various business interests involved. There were several public hearings and/or meetings throughout the process and the public really stepped up to the plate to provide invaluable input to the process.
It is of particular significance to me because the drafting and passing of the law allowed the town to avoid the need to pass a moratorium against windmills. I was opposed to the moratorium from the outset as I felt it would have sent a strong negative message to those considering investing in our community. This was a point that did not escape the public, as residents came out in droves to support the project. The project also received strong support from the unions. In fact, the project manager for BQ Energy stated that the ironworkers for the Lackawanna project worked better than any he had ever seen. This just goes to show the quality of work our residents can do when given an opportunity.
The end result of course was that the town did not send a negative message to investors, but rather sent a very positive message that the town is ready to work business.
This wasn't the only change in town law. The board voted to enact the state's environmental code (SEQR) and eliminate the town's outdated environmental review laws. This will put the town were we should be with respect to environmental review processes.
In other business, the town accepted the Final Environmental Impact Statement for the "Villas of Briarwood" project. This is a project I continue to be very excited about. This will fill a niche that is lacking in the town, specifically creating a community for the empty nesters of our community who are looking to downsize their home as well as reducing the household maintenance. A public hearing for one of the final steps - amending the master plan - is scheduled for July 16 at 7:15 pm.
The town also hired a new assessment clerk and a new planning secretary to fill positions left vacant through a retirement. So I would like to again welcome Lynn DiPirro and Debbie Hann to the staff.
Finally, I would like to welcome two new member of the Scranton Volunteer Fire Department, Scott Gibbons and Thomas Chmielewiec, Jr., congratulate two new Eagle Scouts, David Flanagan Hager and Christopher Bocchiaro and wish good luck to retiring police clerk, Sandra McLaughlin (for some of you bloggers out in cyber space, you may know Sandy as Red's Basement's mother).
The next town meeting is scheduled for July 16 at 7:00 pm.
