Memorial Day Success
Contributed by: Steven Walters   on 5/31/2007

It was a beautiful Memorial weekend, in terms of both the weather and the activities.

On Sunday, I had the honor of participating in the Blasdell Memorial Ceremonies. The Village and the three Posts (Clifton Post 60, AmVets Post 897 and Tehan Post 1449) put on another spectacular event, with the Frontier Wind Ensemble performing for the spectators.

Monday started for me in Lake View for their annual Memorial parade (I always try to alternate between Lakeview and the Village of Hamburg parade). It was another great event. The highlight of this event was the keynote speech given by the Vice Commander of VFW Post 1419. It was powerfully emotional and really highlighted the meaning of this day. I also again got to hear my alma matar perform, this time the Frontier Band. Both performances where truly exceptional and the students should be proud.

From there I was off to the Hamburg Moose Lodge for ourannual flag burning ceremony. I was given the honor of reading the Congressional Proclamation at this event. As always, the honor and dignity shown by everyone involved towards these torn and tattered flags was a sight to behold. What is most unique about this event is that the public is given the opportunity to actually participate in the ceremonies. And if you have an old flag no longer fit for display, drop it off at the Lodge for next year's ceremony.

My next stop took me to my own Post, the American Legion Post 527. Although I was unable to attend our official ceremonies, it was great to see so many friends.

The last ceremony of the day was at VFW Post 1419. Like all the other ceremonies, the VFW does a top-notch job.

It was definitely a busy two days, but more than worth it. A person can learn so much just by chatting for a few minutes with a veteran. These men are truly our heroes and it was great to see so many of our residents show up to these ceremonies to let the vets know this and to remember those who did not come home. I am blessed to have been part of their day.
