A 'Roomier' Makeover
Contributed by: Kathryn Rybczak on 2/29/2008

With hopes of a $1 million prize, the SPCA has become a contestant in the zootoo.com contest.

"We just want things larger," said Gina Browning, public relations director for the Erie County SPCA, commenting on the shelter's physicality. Browning said the shelter would like to expand the cat area and also the isolation room.

"We have treated about 600 cats in the isolation room and by making this room larger, we could have a higher turnout rate," Browning said, pointing that they ultimately want to double the space.

Not only will the extra space help with treating animals, it will also enable the shelter to show- case more pets for potential adoption. Browning said that there are a lot of foster homes in the area because of the lack of space for cats. She said that it is difficult because there are pets that customers and families are not able to see.

Another aspect is the wildlife rehab that the shelter provides, nursing animals like bald eagles and squirrels and then releasing them back into the wild.

"We may be second in rehabilitating wildlife," Browning said, "But again, more space would be a huge increase in the amount of help we can provide."

The ideas circulating throughout the branch would not have been possible without the contest, Browning said.

"We're just dreaming at this point," Browning said. The shelter received information from Zootoo.com advertising the $1 million contest. Browning explained that it was a great opportunity for the shelter to take advantage of. The shelters with the top 20 most votes will be judged.

"Richard Thompson is a marketing genius," Browning said, talking about the creator of the contest. Thompson, who is the CEO of Meow Mix, came up with the idea of the contest.

For Sue Catalano, a volunteer at the SPCA, the contest is a potential dream come true for the shelter.

"We lose adoptions because of the lack of space," she said. "I would love to see this room be double the size." Catalano, who has been a volunteer at the shelter for ten years, would also like to see other changes like fresh air be apart of the renovations. She said that a lot of cats have upper respiratory problems and believes the fresh air would be a great solution.

Browning said that although the shelter is in better shape than some, it is important to look at other features besides physicality.

"We have higher intake numbers than other shelters and with that, space becomes a technicality that is hard to deal with."

The contest continues until Midnight, April 1, and Browning and Catalano urge the community to get out and vote.
