Defending The Homeland

Defending The Homeland. Niagara County is our homeland. Can we afford to defend it? Maybe we do not have to defend our families and ourselves? Maybe we can just do business the same as always and look to our public safety professionals to do the jobs they do now and have always done (they do those jobs quite well!)? Maybe we can have Albany defend us or maybe we can have Washington, D.C., defend us? Maybe we are really not at war? Maybe we don't have to have additional resources to come to the defense of our homeland? I come from a World War II family where growing up I was immersed in stories and legends of local leadership and family preparation and sacrifice to come to the civil defense of the communities in which my family members lived as they followed their love ones from coast to coast during military training and into the fight in the Pacific Theater. It is in my blood to defend the homeland. Niagara County's primary goal for our homeland defense is "To provide for a properly planned, organized, equipped, trained, and exercised emergency response force capable of responding to the County's most likely incidents and to those instances originating along the border that could have a significant impact on the safety and security of local residents and businesses and the larger surrounding region." I have unabashedly proposed our homeland have its own Director of Homeland Defense and Emergency Management in the 2008 Budget - it is in my blood to do so.
