Six Senses To Save Niagara County
Having had the wonderful opportunity to recently attend the 2007 Annual International County/City Managers Association meeting, I came back to Niagara County with some newly developed "six senses" courtesy of the audacious and powerful best selling author Daniel H. Pink (http://www.danpink.com/). Author Pink facilitated three hours of workshop for local government managers, exploring the six senses of Design, Story, Symphony, Empathy, Play, and Meaning. Lessons learned include Niagara County should: (1) design itself to be beautiful, whimsical, and emotionally engaging as a community; (2) fashion a compelling narrative (story) for its reason for being and future prosperity; (3) see the big picture, cross boundaries, and be able to combine its disparate pieces into an arresting new whole - a symphony; (4) empathize with what make its citizens tick, forge relationships, and care for its citizens; (5) realize the enormous health and community benefits of laughter, lightheartedness, games, and humor - play; and (6) pursue the meaning of its purpose and achieving community fulfillment. These six senses can guide the County and shape its world.
