In Memoriam Mr. Mayne. The County has lost a leader, William G. Mayne, Jr, who served as Chairman of the Niagara County Industrial Development Agency from 1998 through 2002. Under his tenure, the NCIDA took title to the long-dormant former Inducon International Commerce Park on Lockport Road in the Town of Wheatfield. The Agency constructed Vantage Center, a 50,000 square foot multitenant/incubator building to attract new businesses into Niagara County. During this time, the NCIDA worked to rally support for local control of the Niagara Falls International Airport and raised the consciousness of the local and regional community as to the importance of the NFIA as a catalyst for economic development. Mr. Mayne was described as "respected in his field, thoughtful in his deliberations, soft spoken, dedicated to his community, and a man with integrity" by Lewiston Supervisor Fred Newlin as his pick for the Town of Lewiston Citizen of the Year in 2006. For over 35 years, Mr. Mayne was the owner of Taggert-Mayne Insurance Agency. He retired in 1997, as the vice president of Warren Hoffman and Associates Insurance Agency. While the record shows that he was extremely successful in his professional pursuits, the Lewiston Porter Sentinel, in a 2006 article, described "his ability to provide meaningful leadership to community organizations" as really what inspires him. The Sentinel also noted that "He clearly has a passion to make our world, here in Western New York, better." The leadership that he has provided to the local community has been focused largely on his work with human service agencies and with organizations related to the economic climate of our region. He served as the board chair of the Niagara Falls Bridge Commission; the Niagara Falls Convention and Visitors Bureau; the Niagara Falls Area Chamber of Commerce; the Niagara County Industrial Development Agency; the Niagara County CanAm Task Force For Free Trade, and, Rides Unlimited. He also served on the board of the Western New York Economic Development Corporation and as a member of the board of trustees for Mount St. Mary's Hospital and Health Center. Over the years, Mr. Mayne was the recipient of many awards, including the United Way Humanitarian Award, the Niagara Falls Chamber of Commerce Niagara Award and the 1995 Leader of the Year Award by Leadership Niagara. He was a man of service to our community.
