Old Friend. An old friend was recently honored. His name was Andy Grimes. He fought in Vietnam and Cambodia in the 1st Air Cavalry along side of me. He was among 77 veterans honored posthumously during the ninth annual "In Memory Day" for their non-combat injuries and emotional suffering caused directly by the Vietnam War. On his death bed, Andy asked his wife, Virginia, not to give up on his effort to be recognized for his service-related disability. He died in December, 1988, at the age of 40, trying to get that recognition. According to Virginia, "He was sick from the time he came home. He never did feel good." He always believed his declining health and a rare lymphoma cancer were results of his exposure to the chemical defoliant Agent Orange while he was in combat in the jungles of Cambodia in 1970. Andy and people like him are the reasons we have our dedicated Niagara County Veterans Service Agency.
