Tax Statement

Tax Statement. "Property taxpayers, all they have to do is pay their tax bill." What idiot would make a statement like that! It is said to be me by the local newspaper. Hmmm... Taxes are a pain (began so long ago by the Massachusetts Bay Colony). We could solve all our problems if we just paid our tax statements. Ha! Taxes just can ruin our lives sometimes. But, they are part of life - the only sure thing is death and taxes (Ol' Ben Franklin). Who pays for what, how much, and by what means are the tax policy questions to ask. The Price of Government, my secular book of wisdom, (http://www.governing.com/books/price.htm) would say the price of government (i.e. taxes) should be determined by what we are willing for government to provide and what is affordable. Those two determinants should be on everyone's mind whenever the smell of taxes is in the air? When I use to rock my children to sleep at night after a day when I was involved in a news story, I often changed the lullaby lyric to "don't believe everything you read in a newspaper" when you lay down your sleepy head. Taxes are serious matters which must be taken seriously in these serious times.
