Blog Entry 6 of 7 Ask the Experts
Please allow me to introduce myself as a first time blogger. My name is Gina Nowak and I am the Training Manager at the Lockport Athletic and Fitness Club. Among training several regular clients on a daily basis, I teach Pilates, step aerobic classes and a Swiss Ball toning class. These days health and wellness is a major topic of discussion. With this being said, many people are on the quest to lose weight and feel better. This does not only pertain to the way they people look, but also how they feel about themselves. With no surprise, the determined and dedicated few are the ones that are successful at making this change. It is a rewarding process for the client and myself to see their hard work show openly in the way they look, feel, and present themselves to others. They posess the walk of a proud person and believe me when I tell you that achieving this goal is absolutely possible. There is no better time to start than right NOW! What is it going to take to start digging yourself out of the trenches to feeling better? This blog is going to help answer your questions specific to health related topics. Please feel free to submit your questions to gina@lockportathletic.com.

Too Much Cardio?
Contributed by: Gina Nowak   on 5/10/2007

Question:

I have read that steady cardio exercise for longer than twenty minutes is counter productive when you are trying to lose weight because you begin to deplete muscle protein instead of just burning off fat.

Jerry

Answer:

It is true that muscle proteins are broken down through cardiovascular exercise, but don't be too alarmed. This is a natural process the body goes through on a daily basis. This process is called "protein turnover". Your body is constantly alternating between the "breakdown" and "rebuilding" of muscle. Even while you sleep there is a certain amount of muscle loss.

Is there such a thing as doing too much cardio? Of course. Excessive amounts of cardio will lead to muscle loss. While every body is different, it's safe to assume between 45-60 minutes 6 to 7 days per week will not lead to muscle loss provided proper nutrition is in place to support the rebuilding process.

Go ahead... Burn some calories, get the blood and oxygen flowing then eat a balanced diet including lean protein to replenish your system.

Come On! Let's Go!
