Blog Entry 2 of 7 Ask the Experts
Please allow me to introduce myself as a first time blogger. My name is Gina Nowak and I am the Training Manager at the Lockport Athletic and Fitness Club. Among training several regular clients on a daily basis, I teach Pilates, step aerobic classes and a Swiss Ball toning class. These days health and wellness is a major topic of discussion. With this being said, many people are on the quest to lose weight and feel better. This does not only pertain to the way they people look, but also how they feel about themselves. With no surprise, the determined and dedicated few are the ones that are successful at making this change. It is a rewarding process for the client and myself to see their hard work show openly in the way they look, feel, and present themselves to others. They posess the walk of a proud person and believe me when I tell you that achieving this goal is absolutely possible. There is no better time to start than right NOW! What is it going to take to start digging yourself out of the trenches to feeling better? This blog is going to help answer your questions specific to health related topics. Please feel free to submit your questions to gina@lockportathletic.com.

ENERGY FOOD!!
Contributed by: Gina Nowak   on 4/23/2007

Question:
To carb or not to carb, that is my question. I am trying to lose a few pounds and am faced with the question about eating carbohydrates. Can you lose weight by eating carbs.?
Susan from Lockport

Answer:

Let's get the skinny on carbs. Your body needs a good source of complex carbohydrates to get through the day with vim and vigor, energy! The carbs you should be focusing on are the fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains found in bread and oatmeal ( whole grain not whole wheat) to name two and lowfat dairy products like cottage cheese and yogurt. These types of foods will give you more energy to perform your daily tasks without tiring. When it comes to getting a workout in, these foods will pull you through with the energy you need to achieve a strong exercise regime. Depriving yourself of these foods, especially before a workout will surley make you feel sluggish, thereby not achieving a good calorie deficit to lose weight. Eating naturally, avoiding processed foods as much as possible will also help. You will know exactly what is in your food when you prepare it yourself. Avoid foods with a lot of sugar or corn syrup and foods high in sodium and fat such as potato chips. If you crave something crunchy in your diet, try an apple or carrots. You will feel good inside and out with your healthy choice.

It's best to read the label of ingredients to make sure they say "whole grain" versus whole wheat or whole wheat flour. Yes the whole grains or multigrains are much better for your system. Your body has to work harder in the digestion process and there is more fiber which your body needs to run efficiently.

Is there a dramatic difference between whole grain and multigrain foods (breads and cereals, for ex.)? I hear a lot about whole grains being better...true?
