Monday night, musicians of all different genres came together to play to an excited crowd at Darien Lake. Sarah Bareilles, Maroon 5, and The Counting Crows all put on amazing shows highlighting their unique talents with music. The crowd was a broad mixture from teenagers to parents, but they all were looking forward to a good show.
Sarah Bareilles was the opener and got a special introduction from Adam Duritz, lead singer of The Counting Crows, saying she was "amazing live." Bareilles played songs from her introductory album "Little Voice" including her hit song "Love Song." As a special treat ,Jesse Carmichael, the keyboard player from Maroon 5, came on stage and did a cover of The Beatles song "Oh Darling." Though still new on the music scene, Bareilles had a lot of fans in the crowd. This was the second time Mary, 18, had seen Bareilles and said, "All of her songs are fun to sing along with and she's really good live."
Next on stage were the co-headliners Maroon 5. Adam Levine, the popular lead singer, told the audience they were "guaranteed an interesting evening" and the band delivered. Playing a mixture of their old stuff and songs from their most recent album, "It Won't Be Soon Before Long", they had the crowd singing along through their whole set.
When you see Maroon 5 in concert don't expect to hear the exact album. The band offers an amped up version of themselves with rocking guitar solos and utilizing the full range of Levine's singing ability. Ashley, 21, enjoyed hearing a different version, "I knew Adam's voice was good, but it's so much better live. He really can hit some high pitches."
The crowd was also treated to a unique cover of Chris Isaac's "Wicked Games" with Levine solo on stage just armed with an acoustic guitar. The band also covered Guns n' Roses' "Patience" encouraging the crowd to sing along.
Finally, The Counting Crows hit the stage to an excited crowd. As their performance started, Duritz told the crowd they would play "a mixture of old and new." The band played songs from all their albums including their newest release, "Saturday Nights and Sunday Mornings." The band didn't forget the favorites like "Mr. Jones" and "Mrs. Potter's Lullaby."
The Counting Crows also paid tribute to the late soul singer Isaac Hayes with Duritz telling how, "You hear someone dies and it affects you. You remember the times they affected you." The band went on to play the song "All My Love (Richard Manuel is Dead)" paying tribute to Richard Manuel, another musician that affected Duritz's life.
The Counting Crows delivered a remarkable show with Durtiz being a great singer, but also an actor of sorts playing and performing for the audience. Jason, 25, had been enjoying The Counting Crows since he was in his teens, "I love that they have kept going strong all these years. They're one of those bands I'm going to enjoy for my entire life."
The whole concert was enjoyable with every audience member being able to experience all different kinds of music from pop to rock. All artists displayed their great music abilities alone, but also the greatness that can come together when musicians decide to come together for the benefit of their fans.
