Bored to "Death Proof"

This month on the Starz channels they are airing both of the 'Grindhouse' films that came out last summer. Being the movie buff I am I really wanted to go to the double feature of Grindhouse and watch Death Proof followed by Planet Terror. Last night I got to watch Death Proof with my wife on cable and I'm glad to say I didn't try and go to the movies to see it.

Death Proof a Quentin Tarentino film stars Kurt Russel, Rosario Dawson, Rose McGowan, and many others including the daughter of Sidney Poitier, Sydney Poitier. The Plot - I'm not sure there is one. We meet a group of girls on a night out at a bar Sydney Poitier being a radio DJ and the somewhat leader of the group. As with any Tarention film, its a lot of dialogue so we have almost an hour of them driving, getting to the bar and then finally meeting Kurt Russell. Kurt plays Stuntman Mike, a stuntman who drives a car he says is "Death Proof" and without spoiling anything, because it was in all of the trailers, in order for you to experience the fact that the car is 'death proof' you have to be the driver, so all passengers...sorry.

So an hour of pointless dialogue that has nothing to do with a plot, why Kurt would be following these girls, or really having to do with anything and then we get some horror action. That lasts about 6 minutes. Its good stuff, great special effects, nasty horror, but it happens once and then its over.

Moving on, Kurt goes after another group of girls. Becuase apparently he's able to find women on a road trip very easily. This car contains Rosario Dawson, Mary Elizabeth Winstead (the girl from Sky High) and Tracie Thomas who was in Rent with Rosario Dawson.

So now Kurt is stalking these girls and we are to expect the same fate for them, and you know what happens? Well I dont, because after another 30 minutes of talking dialogue that again had nothing to do with a plot, I couldnt take anymore and we went to bed. I thought of writing this review tomorrow after I watched the end of the film, because supposedly Dawson's group gets revenge on Stuntman Mike, or at least they prove harder to kill, but I think a true review of this is to say, I couldn't make it through the entire movie, and I love movies.

Okay well wow, great story, I really like Tarentino movies, I can handle the dialogue driven genre that he puts out. Resevoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill, Jackie Brown, all great character movies, all with a lot of dialogue and even some scenes of just plain monolog-ing that don't have anything to do with the plot, and are just character development, I enjoy them.

But this movie was just pointless, and I understand that it was supposed to look that it came from the 70s, but this was too much. Who is Kurt Russel? Why is he doing this? Why does he pick these girls? How does he even find them? There's just to many questions and not enough substance.

What I liked about this movie: Not much, other than the way they made the film look. The quirkiness, the feel of the 70s film, though it was difficult to pinpoint what time period the film was taking place. They had a jukebox that played 45s, but were using cel phones, so hard to say.

What I didn't like about this movie: To Long! The movie was 90 minutes but seemed Waaaay longer. It just had no substance, no real story. Even slasher films have a bit of a plot, this had none.

I give it 2 out of 5 stars. Alot of people say they liked it simply for the fact that it was a Tarentino film, I personally expected more from him.
