Cloverfield - OH MY GOD WHAT IS THAT THING!!
Contributed by: John Kindelan on 1/30/2008

How do you do a movie review for a movie you dont want to spoil for anyone. Answer: The movie was great. Go see it. End.

No really, the movie was very good, and it was great in its uniqueness. It was unique in the fashion of the point of view. I dont just mean the fact that the entire movie is shot in first person hand held camera view, I mean who that person was. The person was that guy you see in Godzilla movies who runs by the camera screaming AHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!! Or remember in Independence Day when all those RVs where driving into the military base, it would be them. Its not the hero of the movie, they didn't come up with a plan on how to kill the monster or discover something the army didnt know they are simply civilians caught in the crossfire, literally.

The movie stars a cast of people you might not have ever seen before, the one person I knew in the film was the guy behind the camera whom you only see for a moment, and the only reason I knew him was because he was on the show carpoolers. Oddly enough in an episode of carpoolers he's asked to video tape a wedding in the same fashion he's asked to video tape a party.

Rob, played by Michael Stahl-David, is the main character of the film outside ofthe big very terrible thing that is destroying New York City. Without giving away to much he has to save Beth, played by Odette Yustman and yet escape horrible death from some sort of creature.

What is the creature? Where did it come from? Don't know its never explained, know why? Because this movie is completely from the point of view of passer by who wouldn't be privy to that information.

There was talk about this movie having warnings of motion sickness, or its being compared to The Blair Witch. I wasn't bothered at all by the motionof the movie, and it is nothing like the blair witch, which is supposed to be a documentary gone awry.

This is such a good film that you find yourself in the theatre screaming "Run Run, go go go go" And the special effects of New York being destroyed were so realistic its frightening. It could be because we've seen buildings fall in NYC so we have real life to compare it to, and when you reflect on that moment in real life it was terrifying.

I give the movie 3 1/2 stars out of 4.

What I liked - The concept of the film, the acting was great, they came across as real people in a situation like this, and the occasional humor from Hud.
What I didn't like - Like others in the theatre the ending could have been a bit better. I understood the concept, and I dont know how I would have ended it otherwise but again without spoiling it, dont look for a big giant ending that truly 'ends' the film.
And...stick around until after the credits are over.
