Blog Entry 23 of 129 Somewhere Between Here and There
What runs through the mind of a 30 something married man with 5 kids a good job a huge comic book collection, an impressive DVD collection, nearly every movie stub from every movie he's seen since Back to the Future; topped off with a mind filled with endless movie quotes, dabbling in theology, a continuous pursuit of being a professional artist while taking a stab at being a writer? Stay Tuned...

Summer TV isnt what it used to be...its better
Contributed by: John Kindelan   on 6/15/2007

I'll admit it, I have always been a TV junkie. From the time i could (and was allowed to) change the channel I was hooked. And growing up in the 80s was a good time for TV watchers. You had the great "new" shows of the 80s like Mork and MIndy, Moonlighting, Bossom Budies,Quantum Leap and still got to watch a lot of the other shows that ran as reruns like MASH, I love Lucy, The Monkees, The Honey Mooners and more.

Television in the 80s when you look back on it was so innocent, The Fall Guy, The A-Team, The Greatest American Hero, all shows that had the "good guy vs. bad guy" theme. Guns may have been firing, and cars flipping over but the bad guy always crawled out of the car just a little shook up, or the shoot out would end in a "okay I surrender" scenario.

The only thing i hated as a kid when it came to TV was the summer. I suppose thats a good thing because that got kids to be outside and run and play and have a lot more fun, but if it rained or you were stuck in the house for some reason, TV in the summer in the 80s was horrible.

The night/prime time summer was nothing but reruns of the same shows that you just finished watching so sometimes it was okay, but nothing new. The day was even worse, I remember dreading "Wimbeldon month". During the day you either had to watch the Price is Right, or soap operas, so when we got cable I thought i was going to be saved by HBO in the summer with some good movies..but no...tennis. Wimbeldonseemed to last forever, you'd turn on the TV flip to HBO in hopes to find a good John Candy movie, but no...Wimbeldon. Ugh.

Now here we are the year 2007 and the great Season Finales have all taken place we're getting ready to hit summer and July is right around the corner which means a whole lot more new summer shows. Some have already started and found a place in our household hearts, So You Think You Can Dance is a family favorite especially since all the girls in our house are dancers. Last Comic Standing and The Next Big Thing are two other great new shows we've adopted and definately more for the men of the house since we're all a bunch of comedians. And our favorites that we've waited all year for are just around the corner.

Sci-Fi Channel will have two of our shows starting soon Eureka and Who Wants to Be A Superhero. We fell in love with both of them last year and can't wait for the second season of who wants to be a superhero, it actually inspired my Halloween costume for last year. We also have Pysch on the USA network starting soon and if you haven't caught that show yet,do so. Some of the best comedy, mystery stuff since moonlighting. The partnership between Sean and Gus is fantastic, they are an amazing comedy team.

So I'm a TV junkie, so my first crushes were Barbra Gordon, Maddie Hayes, and Ginger. Okay I know all the words to the Jeffersons, Welcome Back Kotter, The Dukes of Hazzard and countless other TV themes. Voltron, The Bionic Six, GI Joe, The Super Friends and Spiderman and his Amazing Friends all had messages each Saturday morning for meand taught me something new. Maybe a bit of my parenting skills are a combination Mike Brady, Mr. Cunningham, and Optimus Prime but so far I'm doing okay. I teach my kids right from wrong, I love my wife, I work hard at my joband I know that TV gave me a whole lot of morals and lessons that I still use to this day. And knowing is half the battle.
