Blog Entry 104 of 129 Somewhere Between Here and There
What runs through the mind of a 30 something married man with 5 kids a good job a huge comic book collection, an impressive DVD collection, nearly every movie stub from every movie he's seen since Back to the Future; topped off with a mind filled with endless movie quotes, dabbling in theology, a continuous pursuit of being a professional artist while taking a stab at being a writer? Stay Tuned...

Pop Music of today vs. 1984
Contributed by: John Kindelan   on 8/13/2008

On my way into work I was flipping through the radio and heard Kiss 98.5 talking about a contest going on to win Metro Station, play at your garage and it made me think of a couple of things.
1. What kid that likesMetro Staionis up at 7am listening to the radio during the summer.
2. When did kids become rock stars.

Disney Channel has created a whole slew of rock stars for kids, teens and tweens. The Jonas Brothers, The Cheetah Girls and of course Hannah Montanna. I know of these groups because I live with three girls, Emma(6) who loves any and all of the Disney music groups including The High School Musicals. Sydney (11) who likes The Cheetah Girls, says she prefers Miley Cyrus to Hannah Montanna(there's a difference?) and Kortney 17 who has passed on some of the Disney type music but will still listen to Metro Station. For those of you who don't know Metro Station is made up of Hannah Montanna's real life brother and the real life brother of the character Oliver on Hannah Montanna.(ahhh the joys of being a Dad)

Anyway, these kids are rock stars. Some of them set good examples and a positive role model, but of course the entertainment press is out to always find something wrong with one of them at one point or another. Pictures of Hannah or the girl from High School Musical, causing a big stir. Forget however that the altruistic Pat O'Brien is delivering this news to you, only after he's gotten out of rehab himself.

The press at this point has to be made up of people my age or older. And if I look back to who our role models were when we wereyoung kids and starting to becometeenagers,we had some pretty sad excuses for role models.

Lets travel back to 1984, the number one hit When Doves Cry by Prince and The Revolution off of the Purple Rain soundtrack. I loved that soundtrack, Lets Go Crazy is still one of my favorite songs. Of course my parents wanted to kill me when they heard Darling Nikki so I just had to fast forward through that song. Remember that, having to fast forward through a song?

So what else was I listening to in 1984? A lot of kids my age were into The Eagles, The Dead, and a lot of the older type music, but I'll admit it, I liked the Pop music of the day. I had the Cindy Lauper album, Bruce Sprinsteins Born in the USA, and as much as I hate to admit it, I think I had the cassette single of Kharma Chameleon by Culture Club.

Bruce, Cindy and Prince are all still going strong. But good lord dressing like any of them back in the day just made us all look amazing.

But here's the thing, that generation of music are classics now. My kids love when I play some of the old 80s music. Kortney's a big 80s music fan. We drive around and all sing to Rythm of the Night by Debarge, or anything by Duran Duran, especially Hungry Like the Wolf.

Will anyone be playing Shake It by Metro Station almost 25 years from now. For some reason I doubt it. Not that everything that was a hit in 1984 still holds strong today, I have to say Yes is a definate 'no' and I wish I never met the Thompson Twins.
