Blog Entry 92 of 121 Somewhere Between Here and There
What runs through the mind of a 30 something married man with 5 kids a good job a huge comic book collection, an impressive DVD collection, nearly every movie stub from every movie he's seen since Back to the Future; topped off with a mind filled with endless movie quotes, dabbling in theology, a continuous pursuit of being a professional artist while taking a stab at being a writer? Stay Tuned...

Fanboys and Truebelievers #19 PUNK WINS!!
Contributed by: John Kindelan   on 7/8/2008

This Fanboys and Truebelievers forum has become more of a pop culture blog than strictly a 'comic book' blog. I talked about my collection, books that have come out, movies related to the books, and even events and conventions.

I think being a 'fanboy' is something that spans more than just enjoying wearing your Jack Kirby T-Shirt and mentally knowing details of comic characters like jocks know football stats.

Its a person who spans multiple pop culture genres, I've talked about TV shows like Heroes and Lost, two of the most popular shows on television and their comic book ties. Today I'd like to talk about another guilty pleasure of mine, professional wrestling.

What does this have to do with comic books? Well try and watch Monday Night Raw and NOT see a Superman T-Shirt in the crowd. I started writing this blog last week when it was a bit more relevant, but its still solid.

Last week on Raw Jim Ross (the announcer) came out to bid farewell to Monday Night Raw, he was moving over to comentate on Smackdown, the WWE's Friday night show. He was however interupted by a wrestler known as 'Edge' (real name Adam Copeland, his autobiography is great, check it out).

Edge came out to say how he had defended and kept the World Heavyweight Championship the night before at the Pay Per View and would never be on Monday Night Raw again, so all the fans of Raw would never see a World Title match on their show again. He then was interupted by Batista (real name Dave Bautista, I didnt read his biography, I dont like him). Batista gave Edge the beatdown, beating him up in the ring, outside the ring and then finally powerbombing him in the ring and leaving him unconscious.

Now I'm a fan of Edge, and really dont like Batista (mainly because my wife thinks he's hot) so I didnt care for Edge getting beat up, but what happened next brought back the little kid in me. My son Dyllan sat and watched as CM Punk, Dyllan's favorite wrestler ran to the ring with his "Money In The Bank" briefcase. The briefcase contains a contract saying he can get a title shot any time any where against any champion. So he seized the moment.

He picked up Edge gave him his finisher the GTS (go to sleep, google or you tube it) and pinned him, 1..2...3. And Dyllan and I jumped off our seats and cheered. Something we havent done while watching the shome in quite some time.

Later on in the show Punk was challenged by John Bradshaw Layfield (JBL, he also used to be a commentator on CSPan!) And our fears were that our CM Punk would loose the title the same night he won it, and that the WWE wasn't letting this little guy who preached a straight edge lifestyle hold the title for even a day.

HOWEVER, we were proven wrong and CM Punk defeated JBL in his first title defense, and again Dyl and I jumped and cheered in shock of the matches results.

Now before you get all "ummm duh, wrestlings fake"..Wrestling is not fake. It may be predetermined, but its not fake. Its Sports Entertainment, and this night my family and I were truly entertained. At this time Punk is still champion and it looks like he's holding on to it at least until the next Pay Per View Event, and we'll be watching, cheering him on the whole time.
