Blog Entry 87 of 121 Somewhere Between Here and There
What runs through the mind of a 30 something married man with 5 kids a good job a huge comic book collection, an impressive DVD collection, nearly every movie stub from every movie he's seen since Back to the Future; topped off with a mind filled with endless movie quotes, dabbling in theology, a continuous pursuit of being a professional artist while taking a stab at being a writer? Fanboys & Truebelievers #18 Final Crisis Crisis
Contributed by: John Kindelan   on 6/2/2008

So what does a fanboy do when he goes to his comic shop and is all excited to go pick up the issue number 1 of the big DC Comics crossover to end all crossoevers and its not there? He cries a little bit, but just on the inside so he can keep his manly exterior.

So I head over to Don's Atomic Comics to pick up my Wednesday books, on Thursday, the holiday pushes the shipping back a day, and there are no issues left of Final Crisis. The big DC Comics crossover that started officially in May. I hadn't told Don to hold a copy of the book for me and they sold out. Dang!

To top it off the guy in front of me at the store is also asking to have a copy held, but he wants a variant cover issue. To those non comic geeks, a variant cover is when you have a comic book, one issue, but it has two different covers. Why? So comic geeks will buy two issues. Have I ever done this? Sadly yes, but only if the second cover was realllly good.

So I tell Don to hold an issue of it for me when he gets more in, he wants to know which cover, I tell him the one that has the story inside.

I could run over to Borders and see if its there, but thats cheating, and taking away from Don, so I'll be patient and try to avoid spoilers.

Also for those non comic book readers: What is "Final Crisis?"

First there was "Crisis on Infinite Earths" a 12 part story line from 1985 starring every character in the DC Universse. Protagonist: All the Heroes of the DC Universes, Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman Flash etc. etc. I say Universes because the DC Universe consists of what is called the "multi-verse" This story saw the death of an alternate universes Super Girl, and our universes Flash(Barry Allen) as well as all other 'Earths' except our own.

Then there was "Infinite Crisis" a seven part story in 2005, 20 years after the first which saw the rebirth of the Multi-Verse. This story was pretty much about how our universes Justice League had lost their way. Wonder Woman killed a man, Batman was getting darker and darker, and Superman was acting a bit like a tyrant. So some of the heroes that were spared from the first Crisis return to make our universe into a perfect universe. Led by Alexander Luthor( an alternate universe son of Lex Luthor) Superman from Earth 2, and Superboy from Earth Prime try and change our world. Superman of Earth 2 sees the error of their ways and sides with our heroes, Superboy just becomes down right evil and goes on a killing spree. This was a great story and one you should pick up in a Graphic Novel format.

And now Final Crisis - Whats it about? I'm not 100% so I guess I'll just have to wait and be patient, but MY GOD its KILLING ME! There are several stories running through individual books that are supposed to tie into the final crisis, one being in Batman called Batman R.I.P. Will we see the death of Batman? Doubt it.

John, I'm a big fan of your blog, but all of this comic book geekery is killing me. How about mixing it up with some updates on your family or a rant about some social issue. I know your legions of nerds love this alternate universe fantasy nonsense, but your boring the rest of us to death. I'll even help you get started. I went to see the new Indiana Jones movie this past weekend. What a waste of time and money that was. I am all about "suspension of disbelief", but a 60+ year old Indiana Jones was too big a stretch for me. It was the equivalent of The Godfather III. They really ruined the franchise which this one. Anyway, I look forward to your next posting sans the comic book talk.

John, Don't you think the sensationalistic nature of some of these series is what's killing the medium? I realize that variants and worst-case extreme scenarios draw headlines for the comics companies and bring new readers into the fold, but really? This is why I stopped reading most Marvel Comics altogether. This is what destroyed comic books from the '90s up until around 2000. Comics have come too far to see DC revert to cheesy mini-series. I stopped buying single issues of anything thanks to tactics like these and wait to see what cream rises to the top in the form of trade paperback compilations. I agree with what you say about 'cheating' on Don, too. I won't shop at any other comic book store. It's not even an option.

I didn't make it to the comic store until Saturday and I thought it'd be sold out but it wasn't! I read it last night ;) Not being big into the DC Universe I was... confused... to say the least in reading it. But, it's an "important" comic so I'm in for the long haul. PS Don't forget "Identity Crisis"!
