Blog Entry 77 of 117 Somewhere Between Here and There
What runs through the mind of a 30 something married man with 5 kids a good job a huge comic book collection, an impressive DVD collection, nearly every movie stub from every movie he's seen since Back to the Future; topped off with a mind filled with endless movie quotes, dabbling in theology, a continuous pursuit of being a professional artist while taking a stab at being a writer? Stay Tuned...

Fanboys & TrueBelievers #14 Indies and Mark Bagley
Contributed by: John Kindelan   on 3/20/2008

Its been a while since I posted a fanboys and true believers, I apologize. I am actually putting together my own online comic and I'm working on that a lot lately and will hopefully have the official lauch next week Wednesday!

At the comic book store this past couple of weeks we have had a couple of independent titles come out with number 1 issues, so I decided to pick them up and give them a chance.

Rasl - By Jeff Smith, a writer/artist who had just finished his long run on his title Bone. Rasl is about an interdimensional thief who can jump between dimensions with the aide of a large rocket back pack. Sounds weird, well it is, but I thought I'd give it a try. One of the problems I have with the book is the art. The main character you can't tell if he's an adult or a child or possibly a 'little person'. The person chasing him is also a bizzare looking creature and looks as though its a direct homage to the Spy Vs. Spy characters from Mad magazine.
The story was so so, the art will take some getting used to, but I will pick up issue number 2 when it comes out to see how the story progresses.

Now we jump to almost the complete visual opposite. Echo #1 by Terry Moore also came out this past month. Terry Moore also finished up a long run on his creation that he wrote and illustrated Strangers in Paradise. Strangers starred two female characters and revolved around relationships. Echo also stars a female lead but is more of the Sci-Fi mystery genre. In an interview with Wizard magazine Moore said it was X-Files meets Alias. Moore has a great command of art when it comes to the human form, and especially females. He can draw them very curvacious and yet very realistic. The story seemed intersting as well and I look forward to seeing issue number 2 of this book.

Lastly was Kick A$$ written by Mark Millar and drawn by John Romita Jr. Millar is a great writer probably best known for his work on The Authority or The Ultimates. And John Romita Jr. has drawn virtually every character in the Marvel universe at one point or another, and had a beautiful run on Spiderman. Kick A$$ is the story of a normal kid who reads comics and decides to go out, get a suit and fight crime. This is a world where the only superheros are the ones in comics, so basically its supposed to be as close to reality as possible. The book had A LOT of vulgar language, and some serious violence as well, its really not a book for little kids. Outside of that it was just okay, I might have actually liked the book if it didn't focus on all of the vulgarity, not that I dont curse, it just seemed over the top.

Of the three I can't say I can pick a favorite, I far more enjoyed reading my mainstream books these past couple of weeks. I like the story line going on in the X-Men titles, and The Justice League and The Countdown to the Final Crisis has me intrigued as well.

In my title of this blog I mention Mark Bagley. I came to know Mark Bagley comic book art way back when, when I was reading a book called The New Warriors. Since then he's done a lot of work on Ulitmate Spiderman, and a book called Thunderbolts. He is 51 years old, so he's got some years on me, but I have to say I'm not jealous of him, I hate that he draws comics and I dont. Let me explain, he's good, or rather I'd say he's okay. He can tell a story with art, but there just always seems to be something weird about his stuff. Most of his characters look the same, I dont like his anatomy work, and I think they way he draws people flying is weird. I'm sorry I dont like his stuff, and now he's working on The Mighty Avengers, and well....yuck, and I'm jealous, and I think I could do better. I'm coming for your job Mr. Bagley, here I come!
