Blog Entry 66 of 121 Somewhere Between Here and There
What runs through the mind of a 30 something married man with 5 kids a good job a huge comic book collection, an impressive DVD collection, nearly every movie stub from every movie he's seen since Back to the Future; topped off with a mind filled with endless movie quotes, dabbling in theology, a continuous pursuit of being a professional artist while taking a stab at being a writer? Fanboys and True Believers #9 The Spidey Shake Up
Contributed by: John Kindelan   on 1/5/2008

Greetings Fanboys and Truebelievers. Sorry for the delay, the holidays have kept this comic geek a little busy as of late and when I've had the time to post technology jumps in and doesn't save my blog! Ugh!

So whats going on in comic book world? The great debate between myself and Don and Ian from Don's atomic comics seems to be coming to an end. The debate is what makes good comics. Are comics for kids or for adults or for adults who still wish they were kids?

I'm of the mindset that comics teach you morals and values, and knowing who the good guys are and who the bad guys are a good thing. I think Superman and Batman, The X-Men and Spider-Man still can tell a story to all ages, both old and young. I think they are books I can share with my 8 and 15 year old boys, and now my 11 year old daughter has started regularly reading them as well. I think they are a great avenue for modern art, and telling of stories of what people, good people are capable of doing, you dont have to have a cape and bullet proof chest to be a hero.

Don and Ian think the day and age of the Superhero have somewhat gone away. An adult should be reading an adult comic book because they're better books that two guys in spandex punching each other. The world is a darker place so the comics should refelect that. Superheros are telling the same stories over and over again and not chalenging the readers. Superheros are for kids and most people reading them are reading them to hang on to their youth.

I guess we're both right, both of us have points, both of us believe in what we're saying and to debate something like comics, an art form is a futile thing, saying one artist is better than the other in the comic book world is difficult to do(unless your talking about Rob Liefeld, we can all agree we dont like him).

The great Spider-Man shake up is something that just took place in comics. There has been some on going debates on message boards, and apparently at Marvel comics itself on the directions Spider-Man has been heading. The fact that he's married and on top of that married to someone who was a super model and a movie actress. So how do you have the biggest name in Marvel comics not be married anymore without having him get a divorce or killing her off? How do you take back one of the biggest moments in comics, Spider-Man unmasking. Easy, you have the devil offer Peter and Mary Jane the oppurtunity to take it all away. Huh?!

Yes folks, the devil, Mephisto shows up and offers Peter and Mary Jane the oppurtunity to save the dying Aunt May's life for the price of their love. They forfeit their love for one another, he some how erases everything that has happened as far back as Peter and Mary Jane getting married. So with the swipe of his hand he erased over 15 years of comic book continuity. How is this going to all play out? Who knows, but we are going to get The Amazing Spider-Man four times a month starting next month.

To me this isnt the end of the couple or the end of that story, they might have called it a four part story, but I gotta say it seems like this is just the begining. The bad guy can't win, the story can't end like this, I dont care if they want to restart Spidey or not, you just dont end a story like that.

Oh well, stay tuned to right here to see what becomes of Spidey, I'll keep you informed and we'll see if the nostalgic true believer I am can get his hero to win, or if the dark side will win this one out.
