Blog Entry 63 of 129 Somewhere Between Here and There
What runs through the mind of a 30 something married man with 5 kids a good job a huge comic book collection, an impressive DVD collection, nearly every movie stub from every movie he's seen since Back to the Future; topped off with a mind filled with endless movie quotes, dabbling in theology, a continuous pursuit of being a professional artist while taking a stab at being a writer? Fanboys&True Believers #8 Nexus, GL and a Debate!
Contributed by: John Kindelan   on 12/14/2007

So this week at the comic book store what do i get? A Debate! A great debate has been going on between myself and the owner and employees of the comic shop I go to each week. Don's Atomic Comics on Transit Rd. in Depew and I have been in a bit of debate on whether or not you can actually say if certain comics are better than others.

Don and Ian, two of the guys at Don's Atomic Comics have particular tastes and they tend to think 90% of everything is garbage and the stuff they recomend just blows everything else out of the water.

For those who don't know comics as well there are two different types. Mainstream and Indies. Mainstream are published by major companies like Marvel and DC and are books like Superman, Batman, Spiderman, X-Men etc. Indie comics are published by smaller independent comic book companies like IDW, or Dark Horse and they have books like Surrogates, 30 Days of Night, Walking Dead, Hellboy and others.

We've been in a verbal and blogging debate on Don's website and message boards in regards to what I like and me defending it that its not as bad as they say it is and its just different. And they've been sticking to the fact that they know whats best.

So I went to the shop and they told me I should read Nexus The origin issue by Mike Baron and Steve Rude, and I'll like it, its a great superhero comic. So I read it, the art is good, very good storytelling, but the story itself was to convoluted. The characters origin was boring, it really didnt show me any good reason he became a hero other than he's having nightmares. He's not trying to make right for the atrocities that his father commited, he's just doing it because he's having bad dreams. Part of the story shows Nexus as a young boy living on some sort of space ship, and apparently his mother got lost in the cooridoors and starved to death. Thats just weird. There's another scene where an alien is telling how Nexus saved him and his people from an evil govenrment that took over his planet. He worked at a bicycle family, which apparently made Dr. Seuss type bikes, seemed odd.
So as far as Nexus goes, a bit boring, no real drama, no real heroics, just okay.

Now Green Lantern #25 by Geoff Johns, Ivan Reis, andEthan Van Sciveralso came out this week and it was the conclusion to the Sinestro Corps War story. This was fantastic. The art was amazing, the first two splash pages of the book are phenomenal the artist really went out of his way to really create a beautiful piece of work. The story wraped up all of the loose ends of the story and created a conclusion while also leaving a bit of cliffhanger.
I dont want to put any spoilers here but the next couple of YEARS for Green Lantern should be very cool based upon what was started and hinted upon in this book.

So I have to give this one to the Mainstream Green Lantern book and pass on the Indie book Nexus. Sorry Don and Ian, as you've said before I hold on to that nostalgia of liking the Saturday morning cartoon characters, and Green Lantern really did a much better job this round.
