Blog Entry 57 of 115 Somewhere Between Here and There
What runs through the mind of a 30 something married man with 5 kids a good job a huge comic book collection, an impressive DVD collection, nearly every movie stub from every movie he's seen since Back to the Future; topped off with a mind filled with endless movie quotes, dabbling in theology, a continuous pursuit of being a professional artist while taking a stab at being a writer? Stay Tuned...

Fanboys and TrueBelievers #6 The Outsiders
Contributed by: John Kindelan   on 11/16/2007

It was a decent week in my comics world, New Avengers #36, All Star Superman #9, Batman and The Outsiders #1, Wonder Woman, Salvation Run #1, Green Arrow/Black Canary #2, Superman/Batman #42 and Surrogates #2

DC had several #1 issues come out this week, the Batman Outsiders book, another one called Titans East, and another one Salvations Run. I passed on the Titans East book, but grabed the other two to check them out. Batman and The Outsiders has some of an interesting background. The book first came out in 1983 and consisted of a lot of unknown charcaters. DC was trying something new to see if they could take popular characters like Batman, Metamorpho, and Black Lightning and make their "B-List" charcaters a little more popular.

Batman left the Justice League of America (think Superfriends) to go and start up the outsiders with Black Lightning and Metamorpho, who were two heroes who actually refused membership into the league. The book only lasted three years and in the end Batman ended up rejoining the League.

Years later in 1993 the book was brought back againbut only lasted 24 issues, it had no major characters and only carried over a few from the first run of the book. With no star power to help the book, it was doomed.

Eight years later after that book ended they tried it again. This time the team was led by Arsenal, who was the original partner of Green Arrow. He went and recruited a team including his friend and former teammate in the Teen Titans, Nitewing. Nitewing for those of you who don't know who he is, he was the original Robin, Batman's young partner. The team consisted of a young group of 20 something characters and played off of their younger edgier attitude towards being a superhero. The book played a major role in many of the large cross over titles that ran through the DC comics universe. As itprogressed, some characters left, and new ones came on. Arsenal leftdue to injuries and eventually to join the Justice League of America, thats considered apromotion in comic book world.

The book progressed to issue number 50, where some people will tell you it was officially cancelled. Nitewing, the now leader of the group wanted to leave, he didnt feel a sense of family like he had in previous teams, and he felt if he stayed with the group leading it he would get someone hurt. He had the conversation with Batman, his surrogate father of sorts, and convinced Batman to lead the team again his self.

Which brings us to yesterdays issue of Batman and The Outsiders #1 vol. 2, even though its technically the fourth version of the book. They kept some of the characters from Nitewings team, and have brought back some of the characters from Batman's old team. The art work was really good on the book, especially the coloring of the pages, it looks as though it was done in a paint brush style, but very smooth.

So lets see how long this run of Batman and The Outsiders goes for, it has potential, star power and is trying to combine the younger crowd with the classic crowd. Should be interesting.
