The Forest Floor is Alive - It's Alive!

This past Saturday at Reinstein Woods, we held a "Life on the Forest Floor" program. 22 people showed up (kids and parents) and after brainstorming what kind of "life" we might find, we headed out to the woods. While we were assembling (only minutes after leaving the building), two of our young adventurers found a couple American toads. One was much larger than the other. We call the newly formed toads "toadlets". We were off to a great start! In fact, it was kind of hard to even get to the spot in the woods that we were headed to because we kept finding such interesting stuff! Lots of ants and other insects were everywhere! And since everyone got their own magnifying box to use, all of the nature explorers were able to investigate whatever they wanted to.

Once we got to our location, I set some hula hoops out on the ground as focus areas, but we quickly abandoned them and expanded our territory. Some of the interesting things we found on the forest floor under leaf litter, rocks, and logs or on plants included - slugs (really big ones!), earwigs, millipedes, moths, damselflies, red backed salamanders, earthworms, daddy long legs and leaf-hoppers.

It was an awesome day!
