Ringing in the New Year with the birds!

We welcomed in 2008 at Reinstein Woods Nature Preserve with our first New Year's Day bird count! At 9:00 AM, four hardy participants joined DEC staff on a walk in the woods to record the first bird sightings of the new year, while one volunteer stayed in the education center to monitor the bird feeders.

Sixteen different species and 128 individual birds were counted. In addition to the many birds, participants spotted a red fox run across the Flattail Lake dam and saw "Blondie," our unusal light tan-colored doe, in the woods.

We plan to make this an annual event, so please join us next year--it's a great way to get outside and start out the New Year!

Bird Species list (with the number observed followed in parentheses):
white-breasted nuthatch (3), American goldfinch (19), black-capped chickadee (11), downy woodpecker (6), hairy wodpecker (1), common redpoll (1), red-bellied woodpecker (2), mourning dove (14), tufted titmouse (2), northern cardinal (5), house finch (4), song sparrow (3), American tree sparrow (11), mallard (30), cedar waxwing (16), wild turkey (8)
