Blog Entry 44 of 124 Somewhere Between Here and There
What runs through the mind of a 30 something married man with 5 kids a good job a huge comic book collection, an impressive DVD collection, nearly every movie stub from every movie he's seen since Back to the Future; topped off with a mind filled with endless movie quotes, dabbling in theology, a continuous pursuit of being a professional artist while taking a stab at being a writer? Stay Tuned...

Thursday - Fanboys and True Believers
Contributed by: John Kindelan   on 10/11/2007

I went to Blogging 101 presented by Your Hub last night and I've learned a few things. First of all I'm going to try and be more consistant in my blogging. I've come up with a schedule that I'm going to try and stick to, its a big aggressive, but I think I got it.

Which brings us to today, Thursday, Fanboy/True Believer day. I really don't like that term, It's used to describe a group of people that read comic books. It's like refering to people who watch Star Trek as Trekkies. It has a negative conotation to it, and I prefer True Believer, and I'll explain why at the end.

So why is Thursday's Fanboy/TB Day? Well for those who aren'tcomic readersyou probably didnt know that ever Wednesday comic books arrive at the local comic book store and and are available. So every Wednesday, local comic geeks like myself head to their favorite comic shop to pick up the latest issues of the titles they collect. Therefore on Thursdays I can always give an update of what came out the day before, some reviews of the books or maybe even just discuss what happened at the shop when I went there.

What will the Thursday FB/TB blog be about? I'll discuss terminology used by my fellow comic geeks, like splash page, bi monthly and variant cover. I'll discuss the comic scene here in Buffalo, the underground Comic Book Store wars that have been going on for a long time. Exposing the culture, the cliques, and hopefully bringing some knowledge to you so if you happen to know one of us fanboys/ True Believers you dont thnk we all behave like the fat guy on The Simpsons.

I think it needs to be talked about how comics are not the same as they used to be years ago. They are not just about Superman saving Lois Lane, or Batman fighting the Joker again. There's an underlying philosophy to the books, there are morals and values that can be used and passed on or learned from.

ThetermTrue Believer is what I came up with to describe myself when debating what comics I like to read versus what books the owner of the comic book shop i buy from likes to read is "true believer". Don, from Don's Atomic comics likes Independent books, or "indies", which are books that are not published by the 'big 2' Marvel Comics and DC comics. These books tend to have a darker tone, or are set in the real world, they dont often contain superheores, and if they do those heroes might actually kill the villan or have some morals that might not be the most uprigth. True Believer is in refrence to the old Stan Lee Saturday morning cartoons, like Spiderman and his Amazing Friends or The Incredible Hulk. The Superfriends was another huge infulence but their main phrase was "Meanwhile..back at the Hall of Justice". And I didn't really want to call myself a "Super Friend" I get made fun of enough for reading comics.

So stay tuned True Believers every Thursday and check out the local and not so local comic book scene here at Your Hub. Now, Meanwhile back at the Halls of Your Hub....
