Queen City FC v Maryland United FC Match Report
Contributed by: Queen City Football Club on 6/3/2008

By Jennifer Miller

BUFFALO, NY- Queen City FC hosted Maryland United FC in an early afternoon matchup Sunday at All High Stadium. Unfortunately for the Blues, their offense could not get on the scoreboard and they dropped the 4-0 contest to Maryland.

"We started a little slow in the first half," Maryland's head coach said. "To come away with a win is huge."

Queen City had many of their own chances but some bad bounces, good saves and missed nets blanked them on the scoreboard.

They put pressure on the Maryland defense and keeper early in the game. An opportunity in the 8th minute came when two Queen City players fought for the ball with the last Maryland defender but keeper Mike Svehla found the shot.

A pass from Al Franjoine got through the defense and found Andy Tiedt in the 13th minute but the play was eventually broken up.

Jeremy Watson had the next chance for the Blues when he shot the ball from the left side of the net 6 yards out. Svehla got a piece of the ball with his hands and it rolled out of bounds.

It looked as if Queen City got the first goal of the match in the 17th minute but goal was disallowed on an offsides.

In the 24th minute Peter Bajic, moving 20 yards out on the left side of the net, passed ahead to Franjoine. He then quickly passed to Casey Derkacz who shot it over the crossbar.

Maryland got on the board in the 28th minute when Tony Tamanini blasted a perfect shot from along the right sideline 25 yards out. Queen City keeper Shawn McDonnell had no chance on the perfectly arched shot that hit the top-left corner of the net.

Ten minutes later Lucas Pardew took a corner kick for Maryland and crossed it to a waiting Elon Backer who placed the back into the Queen City net for the second goal of the first half.

The second half brought a goalie change for Queen City with Emilio Colletta replacing McDonnell.

A seemingly mundane shot from 20 yards out in the 59th minute went through Colletta's legs and into the net.

Derkacz placed a free kick 20 yards out to the right of the net in the 62nd minute
to the far side of the net amidst a group of awaiting Queen City players but the ensuing shot once again sailed over the crossbar.

Franjoine had another chance in the 72nd minute when he picked up the ball and slipped through the defense. Svehla got his hands on the shot and tipped it wide of the net for a cornerkick. Two minutes later, Tiedt dove in the box to the left of the net to get his head on a cross but he could not connect with the ball and it rolled wide of the net and off the field

Svehla came up big once again in the 75th minute making a diving save after Franjoine got the ball to Steve Butcher who made some moves around the defense and blasted a shot at the net.

In the 88th minute, Pardew connected with a ball 10 yards out on the left side of the net and squeezed the shot through the open space to the left of Colletta right inside the post.

"We had a lot of chances," Queen City head coach Tom Cordaro said. "We're playing a style of play that is meant to attack, meant to get players forward, meant to score goals. It's meant to beat teams by scoring goals. We're not scoring goals and we're not defending well enough."

The Blues will look to even up the season series with Maryland United when they travel south to take on the team Saturday night. The next day they will stop in Lancaster, PA to take on the Inferno.
