A goal off the foot of Pennsylvania Stoners forward Matt Baker around the 88 minute mark proved to be the only goal needed for the visiting Stoners to surpass the Queen City Football Club on Saturday night at All-High Stadium.
Before Baker's late goal, it seemed destined that Queen City was going to open their regular season portion of the schedule up with a scoreless stalemate, with neither team being able to connect on any of their shots.
"(I'm) pleased with the result obviously," said Pennsylvania head coach Todd Ehrich. "I knew it was going to be a tough game coming up here and playing a seasoned team like Buffalo. To come away with a win was really more than I thought we were going to get."
Although ultimately posting a losing effort, Queen City (0-1) did manage to outshoot Pennsylvania (2-0), 12-9.
"I don't think we deserved the loss," said Queen City FC head coach Tom Cordaro. "(It's a) tough way to lose a close one. We had a defensive breakdown. They got behind us and put one in the back of the net."
Queen City went on the offensive attack early in the first half, having several chances of putting the ball in the back of the net. However, Pennsylvania eventually tightened its defensive efforts and forced Queen City's goalkeeper Shawn McDonell to make two saves around the 29 and 38 minute marks, keeping the game scoreless going into halftime.
"It was a wake up call to us," Cordaro said. "We came out here and thought we were just going to walk all over them. We need to work hard if we are going to win."
The second half saw City make a slew of substitutions, which helped add some extra punch to its attack, but proved to not be enough to get past Pennsylvania goalkeeper Sam Bishop. After Baker's goal, Bishop maintained his steady play through stoppage time to preserve the win.
"In the second half, we put some subs in that did very, very well for us and we really bossed them around," Cordaro said. "Unfortunately that doesn't always show on the scoreboard. We had our chances and when we get those chances we have to put those away."
Saturday's fixture was also City's first National Premier Soccer League regular season game held at the recently renovated All-High Stadium, just behind Bennett High School on Main Street in Buffalo. Last season, the team played its home contests at the old War Memorial Stadium.
"(All-High's) excellent compared to War Memorial," Cordaro said. "They've been very good to us and on top of it, it was a perfect night for soccer."
Queen City will next face the Boston Aztec on Saturday, May 31 at All-High Stadium, kicking off at 7:00 p.m.
