Steinkamp's Installations will suck you in
Contributed by: Tom Voss on 3/22/2008

Art is a lot of things to a lot of different people. To some it's a canvas, to others a hunk of clay and to some, it's an orange dot on black background. But some, a select few, see art as something bigger and more encompassing and Jennifer Steinkamp certainly fits the bill.

Working in the medium of installation art, large art projects that can take rooms of space up, she has been creating new and visually stunning works for almost 20 years. Most of what she does uses projections of digitally created pictures on a variety of different backgrounds. Some images mimic trees or flowers while others defy any concrete definition other than 'abstract'. That is not to say that the average viewer can not take in her work and enjoy them, as Steinkamp puts it, she "leaves it up to the viewer to find the meaning in the work."

An example, currently on display at the AlbrightKnoxArtGallery, entitled "Epiphany" and it is a water like projection done on the floor between two sets of stairs. The artist herself says it was done to evoke the sense of the ocean and even make the viewer sea sick. Children are having fun jumping around in the projected image as if they were actually in a pool, minus the wet side effects.

This unique experience at the Albright Knox continues through June 29 th and is an event that will never be duplicated, literally. Every piece was created just for the museum and the spot where it is played, so it is all site specific art that will never be exactly duplicated anywhere else. As Steinkamp put it, each piece was "created just for that space." It is art created just for Buffalo and her patrons.

Samantha Yikes, of south Buffalo, added this while viewing the "Space Ghost" installation, "It sort of brings you into the work. You're not just viewing it, you're experiencing it." Steinkamp accomplishes this through not only visual means but also with the use of sound and music. Artificially created noises as well as audio tracks play in conjunction with the art to create a more complete experience.

Carol Funk, from Ontario, Canada, added for the exhibition as a whole, "It really is something else. You don't see this sort of art everyday which makes it all the more interesting to actually see." Steinkamp's pieces in the gallery take up entire hallways or just the very corner of the room. No matter the size, the overall effect and draw of the images is unique to every room.

Steinkamp also has works on display is Texas and most notably Las Vegas's Fremont Street where a large archway, spanning a large stretch of the entire street, has her "Aria" projected. It isn't so much a painting as it is a movie that plays every few hours. The cornucopia of colors and sounds envelopes the viewer in the work in the same way her smaller works do.

This is certainly an exhibit that any person, whether they are an art aficionado or just an average guy or girl, will be able to enjoy. The colors, architectural elements, sound and overall feel of her works will provide something to everyone, young and old.
