BUFFALO SCHOOL #82 - GOOD THINGS ARE HAPPENING!
History was made on January 28, 2008 at Buffalo's Public School #82.
The school is better known as
PS 82 Early Childhood Center.
After you read what happened, you will agree that this school is a place where children are the center attraction of a great learning experience.
The Principal is
Denise Segars-McPhatter
and she is a lady who not only believes in her students, but she
just believes
they can do great things.
The YWAP NBA (No Bullies Allowed) Program has never before been delivered to just 3rd and 4th Grade Students. The Conflict Resolution Program is designed for a more mature grade level. Although we have presented assembly programs for several K-8 schools, we have never had the pleasure of delivering a program for just 3rd and 4th Grade students. After a meeting with all of the Buffalo Public School Principals from the Elementary grades, Denise asked if her school could be considered for our program. It was impossible to say no to someone with such a great compassion for children.
This Principal took a chance on her students. That chance was based on her strong belief that they could succeed. They did succeed in a big way!
When you walk into the building you are met with smiling people. It almost seems like they are saying
"How may I help You?"
before you even ask for help. The building itself is bright and cheery with lot's of sunshine yellow. Everyone offered to help from the front office to the guy who went out of his way to make sure the lights and the sound system were in perfect working order. Even a teacher escorting her class down the hall offered her help in opening a door.
The students filed into the auditorium with a great deal of energy. They were given the NBA Booklets that contain tips on conflict resoluition and how to stop bullying. The audience was very respectful and attentive. After a very lively presentation including humor and audience participation through an impromtu drama, smaller groups of leaders met for "roundtable discussions." The students asked very serious questions and seemed to care about each other.
They know that they should treat each other with respect. When the Teachers and their Principal show that they
JUST BELIEVE
in them, they respond! This is what they believe and what they pledge to do:
Four Star Character Plan Pledge
• I will be caring and kind
• I will be respectful of myself, others and property
• I will be responsible for my own actions
• I will be cooperative with everyone
Principal Denise Segars-McPhatter kept pushing her students to get all they could out of the program.
She really wants to help them succeed and that desire is so contagious that her staff has the same compassion.
Monday, January 28, 2008 was a beautiful day in the neighborhood.
We think they should rename this school. It should be called:
***THE HOW CAN I HELP YOU SCHOOL***
