"Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass...it's about learning to dance in the rain." This was the motto for the Dancin' in the Rain Gala held at the Statler Towers Wednesday night. The event was held to help find a cure and further research behind ALS, which is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that attacks nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, eventually leaving a person paralyzed and it is fatal, otherwise known as Lou Gehrig's disease, through the Margaret Roblin Fund. Margaret Roblin is currently afflicted with ALS but, the Gala wasn't about showing off the troubles of ALS, instead it displayed how to look past the pain and find some hope, and a lot of fun.
A silent auction was held with items ranging from art to jewelry. Jazz singer Sharon Bailey and the band Atlas performed for the patrons. Also there was a V.I.P. event for large donors and close family and friends offering food from local restaurants like The Chophouse, Tempo, and Café Aroma. Karen and Dennis Penman are good friends of Margaret, and her husband Danny, and thought the event was great as Dennis told, "It's a hit, completely over the top of anything expected. It really shows Margaret's passion for life and heightens public awareness of the disease."
The woman of the night made her big appearance looking stunning wearing a beautiful white suit. It didn't matter that Margaret was confined to a wheelchair because once her presence was known everyone instantly flocked to her and gave her hugs, kisses, and their immense support. Danny Roblin gave a short speech before the official start of the event, "When I look around the room tonight everyone here is people we truly love and care about. Everyone has risen to the occasion to find a cure for this heinous disease." He finishes his speech and soon after in true Scottish fashion the Buffalo City Guard Gordon Highlanders start playing and marched out to lead everyone into the main room.
In the main room there was a dance floor, more food stations, and an ice sculpture even acted as a luge for pouring drinks. Large screens showed off the main donors for the event such as UBS Financial Services, Inc. Even though he was busy Danny did have a minute to talk about the event and his wife, "The event is being held because basically there are so little answers to what ALS is and how to treat it. Margaret woke up one morning and said to me, 'Let's find a cure.' It's part of a process to make a difference. "A difference was certainly felt last night. The Margaret Roblin Fund definitely gives hope to friends and families alike that one day a cure for ALS will be found.
