The Prom and How Things Have Changed
Contributed by: Deanna Russo YourHub Manager   on 6/14/2008

I went back to the prom last night, and it was an interesting and memorable experience. Some of you may be looking at my picture on YourHub, thinking, "she looks young, but she's definitely older than the average
prom-goer". Yep, you are right. I went as a guest with Jennifer Stehlar, invited by Iroquois High School to remind teens about the dangers of drinking and driving. I'm happy to say 50 prom-goers signed a pledge to make the night a safe one.

The Iroquois High School prom was held at the Hyatt in downtown Buffalo. Jenn and I had a great time, it wasn't just educational -reminding kids about the dangers of drinking and driving - it was alsoa lot of fun.

So how have things changed since I went to the prom 15 years ago? Quite a few. Obviously the styles of dresses. There were so many girls who lookedbeautiful last night - the colors were bright and captivating. Each had their own individual style. There were some designer dresses, while others looked like they could have been designer selections. Bright blue, teal, and deep purple were my favorites.

One of the biggest differences I noticed - girls these days are going for comfort. Many traded in the highheels for sandals. They wore gold and silver
flip-flopsinstead of the traditional heels that were likely to be kicked off on the dance floor - after all that's what Jen and I did when we danced for a few songs!
It's no longer necessary to be tall - now being comfortable is just as important.

Guys also had their own style. I've posted a picture here of Jen and I with those who traded in the traditional black and white tuxes for more colorful choices. Hats and canes too!

I thought for sure that the music would lose me - but Jeff Toy, the prom moderator and DJ had many great choices - including those from my high school and college days. Who knew House of Pain's "Jump Around" would continue to be as popular now as it was backin 1992?

One thing that hasn't changed - strange looks when the adults took the dance floor. When Jen and I danced, we definitely got some "What's up with them?" glances, and there were a few guys who asked "Is dancing with you legal?", but we shrugged off the stares and continued to have a great time.

Soon after crowning and adding sashes to the elected members of the prom's "royal court", we called it a night.

It really was a fun and memorable experience. Thanks to Jen and all at Iroquois who made it so special for seniors and those of us who attended as guests.

Until next time...

Deanna

You both look gorgeous in your prom wear! I'm so glad to see the amount of teens that signed the pledge to not drink and drive. Very good story.
