Many apartment complexes have been calling HOME for fair housing education of tenants and of staff. Some apartment complexes wish to know fair housing laws regarding tenant associations and rule-making procedures, while other apartment complexes wish to educate tenants on different terms and conditions available for people with disabilities. No matter what the reason, many housing providers turn to HOME and choose to educate tenants and staff on their rights under the fair housing laws.
During one of these fair housing presentations at a senior citizen apartment complex, a tenant came up to me to explain her specific situation: apparently one neighbor was spreading rumors about her that were very hurtful concerning her sexual orientation. The rumors continued until it escalated to nasty comments made aloud as she went to use the common areas in the apartment complex. It became very difficult for her to live in that apartment complex. I explained the laws concerning harassment and coercion, and further explained that she may have a discrimination case if she chooses to call HOME to file a complaint. Presenting her with one of our "You Can Fight Discrimination" brochures to review and consider calling HOME for help, I empathized with her situation and encouraged her to call HOME to speak with one of our counselors.
