Blog Entry 19 of 22 Housing Opportunities Made Equal
We were born out of the Council of Churches on Delaware Avenue in Buffalo, New York in 1963. From a small group of concerned citizens, both African American and white, Housing Opportunities Made Equal was given life to fight for fair and equal housing rights for minority groups. This original mission blossomed with the Fair Housing Act of 1968, working to combat discrimination in housing. This is our story. This is our place in the community. HOME promotes equal opportunity in housing without restrictions based on such factors as race, color, creed, national origin, sex, age, martial status, disability, sexual orientation, military status, gender identity and expression, lawful source of income, and the presence of children within a family. HOME’s mission is to assist the people of Western New York to live in the housing and the communities of their choice through education, advocacy, enforcement of fair housing laws, and the creation of housing opportunities. Here we believe that diversity begins at HOME. Accept it. Embrace it. Love it. Through this blog it is our intension to reach out to the community as a whole and share our stories: the stories of our mission, the stories of our staff, the stories of our lives. Through sharing our stories, we attempt to educate and inform the public about fair housing laws and what recourse one may have if one has been discriminated against so that we may help him/her get the justice deserved.

Apartment Complexes Trained on Fair Housing Laws
Contributed by: Housing Opportunities Made Equal   on 6/26/2008

Many apartment complexes have been calling HOME for fair housing education of tenants and of staff. Some apartment complexes wish to know fair housing laws regarding tenant associations and rule-making procedures, while other apartment complexes wish to educate tenants on different terms and conditions available for people with disabilities. No matter what the reason, many housing providers turn to HOME and choose to educate tenants and staff on their rights under the fair housing laws.

During one of these fair housing presentations at a senior citizen apartment complex, a tenant came up to me to explain her specific situation: apparently one neighbor was spreading rumors about her that were very hurtful concerning her sexual orientation. The rumors continued until it escalated to nasty comments made aloud as she went to use the common areas in the apartment complex. It became very difficult for her to live in that apartment complex. I explained the laws concerning harassment and coercion, and further explained that she may have a discrimination case if she chooses to call HOME to file a complaint. Presenting her with one of our "You Can Fight Discrimination" brochures to review and consider calling HOME for help, I empathized with her situation and encouraged her to call HOME to speak with one of our counselors.

If you have experienced discrimination in the form of harassment, coercion or interference with the peaceful enjoyment of the premises, please contact HOME at 854-1400 or www.homeny.org. If you manage an apartment complex or other housing and would like our education coordinator to come to your complex to educate your tenants or staff on their rights under the fair housing laws, please contact 854-1400 ext 22 or gsmokowski@homeny.org.
