Blog Entry 3 of 3 Hamblog: Thoughts from the 'burg
I'm just a lowly aspiring journalist soon to be released into the big bad world with a few opinions on this crazy world we live in. Politics? Art? Culture? News? Journalism? Music? It's all fair game. I don't pretend to be an expert, and I don't expect to change the world. All I can offer is a perspective, a fresh look, a new idea, and maybe if I plant enough seeds, something will start to grow. The longest journey begins with a single step, so I'm lacing up my running shoes and stretching my hams, hoping to get a leg up on life.

Free Fallin' Into Petty-Induced Ecstasy
Contributed by: Buffalo.com/YourHub Lizz Schumer   on 6/23/2008

It wasn't an Indiana night, but Tom Petty fans put on their party dresses anyway and stood their ground at the Darien Lake Performing Arts Center Saturday night for one of the best concerts this side of Indianapolis. Curtains of rain may have soaked the rabid crowd, and lightning may have lit up the sky like celestial camera flashes, shutting down the power twice, but concertgoers "won't back down," not even when the going gets tough, the ground gets soggy, and the stage gets dark. Petty called us "crazy," and so we were.

The best part of Petty's heart-pounding, gut-wrenching, driving drum beats and intricate guitar riffs is its universal appeal. Fans from ten to ninety all crowded in together to party like it was 1979. From boomers reliving the glory days when they too danced with Mary Jane to the tunes of Petty and the Heartbreakers to their former selves reincarnated in 20-year-olds in tie-dye, riding the reverb for the first time, everyone seemed to have a rousing time.

Are you an American Boy? Did you grow up strong and grow up right? Have you flirted with time and run down a dream? Did you once (or twice, or a thousand times) kill the pain with Mary Jane? Then you know what I'm talking about when I say Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, topped off by a staggering opening by Steve Winwood and the famous Harmmond, is a transcendal experience. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers let fans leave this world for awhile, and escape to a place where you can still write your name in the sky.

Wherever you are tonight
I wish you the best of everything, in the world
And I hope you found
Whatever you were looking for

Yeah and it's over before you know it
It all goes by so fast
Yeah, the bad nights last forever
And the good nights don't ever seem to last
And man, we never had the real thing
But sometimes we used to kiss
Back when we didn't understand
What we were caught up in.

Thanks for a great show, Tom.
