With many Western New Yorkers heading out of town this weekend, I thought it appropriate to give some general travel tips to better prepare you for a hassle-free travel experience. As a reminder, travel is an "adventure", so go with an open mind and try to go with the flow.
If you are traveling by air, reconfirm your flights with your air carrier at least 24 hours prior to departure and check for any schedule changes. Take advantage of online check-in the day prior wherever possible. In addition, familiarize yourself with current TSA rules and regulations by visiting
www.tsa.gov
. The biggest news since last fall is the new 3-1-1 rule which affects carry-on baggage. Each traveler must use a quart-size ziploc baggy (with zip-top) for gels, liquids and aerosols which must be 3 ounces each or less. This rule DOES NOT apply to checked baggage, just carry-on. In addition, you are not allowed to bring any liquids into the airport with you such as water bottles, coffee, etc. You may purchase these items once you have cleared security. I still recommend taking granola or energy bars to be prepared for last minute delays.
Make sure you have carried all of your important documentation on your person; DO NOT put them in your checked baggage! Make a copy of your passport pages (if applicable) and keep in a separate place away from your actual document. It is also a good idea to leave a copy at home with a friend or family member in case your passport is lost or stolen.
Arrive at the airport early - this weekend is going to be crazy at the Buffalo Airport! I recommend a MINIMUM of 2 hours prior departure for domestic air travel and 3 hours prior forinternational travel. Depending on the time of day you are traveling, expect longer lines in the security area. Remember, you are on an "adventure"!
Leave a copy of your itinerary with important phone numbers (resort information) for a friend or family member so that they may contact you in case of an emergency.
Most importantly, have a great time! To plan your next vacation, please give my office a call at 716-636-1312.
