For a second game in the row, the Buffalo Bulls men's soccer team on Friday night at UB Stadium squared off against a fellow Western New York foe.
However, unlike Wednesday's 3-0 sound victory over Canisius, the Bulls 1-0 win over the St. Bonaventure Bonnies was not just closer, but also a more physical contest, as well.
The lone goal of the game came off the foot of senior defender Dan Gwyther during the first half in the 32nd minute of action. Gwyther took a pass from junior forward Marc Stencel and knocked the ball in the net off of the right upright past Bona's sophomore goalkeeper David Flynn.
After that, Buffalo was able to continue to thwart the Bonnies' attempts to get on the scoreboard. The Bulls gained a man advantage throughout the rest of the match when St. Bonaventure's junior defender Matt Culo received a red card near the end of the first half. The Bonnies committed 19 penalties in the game, compared to Buffalo's 15.
"We knew they were a nippy team from the scouting report," Gwyther said. "We just tried to keep things safe and secure."
Despite the missing defender, Buffalo could not register any additional points on the scoreboard in the second half, even though the Bulls outshot the Bonnies 8-6 in the second period.
"We were getting so undisciplined with out attack," said Buffalo head coach John Astudillo. "We asked for more patience and control in the second half and I'm not sure we did that."
Goalkeeper Bob Shuttleworth continued to provide be a strong backbone for the Bulls' defense, as he made two saves in the victory and recorded his fifth consecutive shutout this season, setting a new team record.
"As just as much as I am about Bob (Shuttleworth) I am about Gwyther," Astudillo said. "(Gwyther) organizes the pack and leads the defense. It's the people right in front of (Shuttleworth), too."
The Bulls then went on to beat Duquesne on Sunday at UB Stadium, 1-0, to extend their shutout streak to six games.
